September 2011 Newsletter
I had hoped to start with such a positive newsletter as in School we have so much to celebrate
(as indeed you will read later) however, I have to first of all apologise on behalf of the Local
Authority for the closure yesterday.
The re-roofing of the main building being carried out by MITIE TILLEY on behalf of South WEST
1 (the Local Authority) is way behind schedule, despite myself and governors being fully involved
and expressing our grave concerns throughout the holiday.
Seven days before our staff were due in school I decided the site was unsafe with major roof
leaks throughout the building as well as all the materials lying everywhere.
Despite repeated reassurances from the Local Authority Officer and the MITIE Commercial
Manager (taking us right up to 7.00 am. yesterday morning) the roofing contractors had failed to
complete the work required over the weekend and when I arrived at school I could see straight
away the site and building were totally unsafe and had to make the decision to close there and
Yesterday under Local Authority supervision (Buildings and Health and Safety officers were
deployed to RGS) the contractors made the site and building safe enough for us to open today.
I have already complained at the highest level about this appalling state of affairs and rest
assured the governing body and I will be taking it much further. I am disgusted that our young
children and their families have been treated with such utter contempt and am absolutely
appalled by the work practices we have witnessed over the holiday and were presented with
The roofing contractors have been dismissed by MITIE and replaced with a new team and
officers have assured me that the building is safe to work in, if still unfinished!
Thankfully local radio supported us very well yesterday with the late closure decision and
perhaps this is a good time to remind you (with winter approaching) that school closures are
always announced on BBC Somerset Sound, Heart FM and of course on the school website:
Now on to more positive school news!
Our new building
Our new Extended Servicers/Community Room was installed without a hitch and looks fabulous,
providing us with that extra facility for our Rockwell Green community to benefit from.
Congratulations and thanks to ELLIOTs the company that made the building and to Abacus
Construction, the local company that did all the groundwork.
More news when it is officially open.
I am so delighted that we are back up to 6 classes again, but with the Number On Roll at 161
already, new families being sent to us all the time by County Hall and the Bagley Road housing
development: who knows; it could very well rise to 7 classes!
We are very pleased to welcome our new Reception teacher and Foundation Stage Manager
Mrs Rachel O’Malley. Mrs O’Malley is a very experienced Reception teacher and comes with a
great deal of senior management experience as well. I know she has lots of exciting plans to get
you involved with Class 1 so watch out for class letters coming home.
Alan Bryant our new Caretaker and Sandy Letten our new Cleaner have certainly had a ‘baptism
of fire’ this summer: what a way to start a new job! Both have worked extremely hard to get the
school clean and ready and I should like to sincerely thank them both for a superb start in what
has been a most demanding holiday and the commitment and loyalty to RGS they have both
Mrs Goddard is pregnant with her second child and we send our warmest congratulations and
best wishes to her and her husband. Her maternity leave does not begin until January which
gives us plenty of time to secure high quality maternity cover for Class 4.
New PE uniform
Please be reminded that the new PE uniform is now compulsory. The new colour of the PE t-
shirts is royal blue, rather than white. All children will be required to have a royal blue t-shirt from
September. Mrs Abbott has a supply of these shirts, embroidered with the school logo available
Please ensure that your child has full PE uniform in school AT ALL TIMES.
Plain black shoes for school please, NOT TRAINERS
Healthy eating / Packed lunches / Drink
Please remember we have ‘Healthy School’ status. Lunchtime supervisors will let children eat
chocolate coated biscuits as part of their lunch: chocolate bars and sweets will be sent home
uneaten. Please also remember to include a drink with your child’s packed lunch.
Water bottles stay in the classroom and we all need another drink at lunchtime.
Sickness – 48 hours absence from school
Parents are reminded of the Local Authority policy regarding child sickness: if children suffer
from sickness and/or diarrhoea they must be kept away from school for 48 hours after the last
bout of illness.
Holiday during term time
Please remember that all requests to take children out of school during term time for holiday
purposes due to work restrictions, need to be supported by official documentation and can only
be authorised under extreme circumstances. This is the law and nothing to do with RGS.
