Information about Team Work Plans and Contract
Working in Teams takes a great deal of communication and a good set of ground
rules. Therefore, a Team work plan and contract is required so that Team
members discuss and agree upon a common set of rules and protocols for
A Team Work Plan and Contract is a document prepared with the input of each
team member prior to starting work on Team activities. A Team work plan helps
to ensure that students are aware of their responsibilities to the Team and are
held accountable for their own actions within the Team. Students develop their
own "rules of engagement" through development of a Team Work Plan, which
provides an opportunity for the Team to specify preferred methods of
communication, meeting schedules, and goals of Team members. This
document is more for your Team than it is for me so feel free to tailor it to your
Team's needs. Try to keep your Team contract short and concise - one or two
Critical Components of the Team Work Plan and Contract
A. Objective: Provide at least one sentence that clearly defines your proposed
Team goal for the semester.
B. Names/Contact Information:
1. List the names and complete contact information that you are willing to
share for each Team member (home phone, work phone, cell phone, e-
mail, fax, pagers, instant messaging, etc.).
2. Next put an asterisk ( * ) next to the contact method most preferred by
each member of the Team.
3. Designate one person to lead the team or rotate leadership but be sure to
indicate this on the contact list. The Lead Person is only responsible
for assuring that work is completed, not completing all the work on an
activity on their own.
C. Way of Work: Present your Team's way of work for completing the
activities. In essence, address how you will split the workload, yet work on this
as a Team in order to provide equal learning opportunities and create the best
work possible. You do not have to address every bullet point below. Rather
make some decisions regarding what feels right to your team. You may wish to
include issues such as:
Who will be responsible for writing the final deliverables?
How will you divide the work to ensure it is equitable?
How and when will you evaluate each other's work before it is placed into
the final product?
How will you go about resolving Team conflicts?
Here are some examples of roles individual team members can play (not all roles
need to be filed and again you may rotate these roles).
Team facilitator: moderates discussions, keeps the Team on task, assures
work is done by all, and makes sure all have opportunity to participate and
Timekeeper: monitors time and moves Team along so that they complete
the task in the available time, assumes role of any missing Team member
if there is no wildcard member.
Recorder: takes notes of the Team's discussion and prepares a written
Checker: makes sure that all Team members understand the concepts and
the Team's conclusions.
Summarizer: restates the Team's conclusions or answers.
Elaborator: relates the discussion with prior concepts and knowledge.
Research-Runner: gets needed materials and is the liaison between
Teams and between their Team and the instructor.
Wildcard: assumes role of any missing member.
D. Procedures: What procedures and penalties do you wish to implement in
the case of "Team slackers" or Team members who deviate from your Team
Discuss any other information that you would like to include in your Team
E. Signatures and Dates: In order to be valid, all Team members must
provide their written signature and the date on the final Team Work Plan.
