CALCULATING EQUATIONS BY CALCULATOR

Equation Solver

Preparing to use the Equation Solver on the graphing calculator:
Set up the equation as 0 = , by moving everything on the left
side to the right side. This can be done by subtracting the whole
thing in parenthesis. Do not change anything!

4(2x – 1) = 3x + 6

0 = 3x + 6 – (4(2x – 1))

Using the Equation Solver:
 Press MATH.
 Select 0:Solver…
 The screen should show “Equation Solver, eqn:0=”, if it
does not use the up arrow and press CLEAR to clear out
any old equation.
 Enter the transformed equation after 0=. Be sure to type
it exactly as is, including all parentheses.
 Press ENTER. Verify the equation at the top. The x = # is
not correct until the Equation Solver has been completed.
Ignore any value at this point. The bounding sequence is
for all real numbers.
 To complete the calculations with the Equation Solver
press ALPHA ENTER.
 The correct solution should now be in x = .

1. 5x + 2(3x – 1) = 7x + 10
a. Rewrite the problem in 0 =    form.

b. Solve using the Equation Solver.
2. Carlisle Cars rents moderate sized cars for \$15 plus \$0.75 per
mile. If Mr. Ed’s total charge was \$150.25, how many miles did
he drive?

a. Write an equation to represent the given situation.

b. Rewrite the equation in 0 =   form.

c. Solve using the Equation Solver.
