Investigation 1: Mixtures and Solutions p.1

Sand is made up of many different tiny rocks or seashells. You picked up a pinch of it
and looked at it under a microscope. You made a chart showing the different colors and
number of pieces that you saw. Below is the chart that you made.
Colors Number of
            Pieces
Red 5
Yellow 2
Black 6
White 4
Pink 1
You have a bag containing these pieces. What is the probability that you would pick a
Black piece? Yellow? White? Which color would you expect to pick the least amount of
times? Why? Would any colors have an equal probability? Why?

Investigation 1: Mixtures and Solutions p.1

Below is a list of ingredients that you could use to make a snack mixture. Choose which
items you would like. Create a recipe. How much of each item will you use to make one
batch of your mixture?
Ingredients:
Pretzels Peanuts
Chocolate candy pieces Dried Fruit
Walnuts Candy Corn
Cereal Chips
Marshmellows Granola

How much of each item would you need to make 5 batches of your mixture? Why would
this be a mixture instead of a solution?
