Positive Psychology 101
An Introduction to Positive Psychology with
Daniel Tomasulo Ph. D, TEP, MFA, MAPP
“Positive psychology is the scientific study of what makes life most worth living. It is a call for
psychological science and practice to be as concerned with strength as with weakness; as
interested in building the best things in life as in repairing the worst; and as concerned with
making the lives of normal people fulfilling as with healing pathology.” (Christopher Peterson,
2008)
A Full Day Conference that will include:
The history of Positive Psychology: from Martin Seligman’s ground-breaking work to
today’s innovative practitioners
The research evidence supporting the science and practice of Positive Psychology
Skills and interventions from positive psychology that you can learn today and use

Practical ways you can use positive psychology tools in clinical practice, at home, and

I thoroughly enjoy the work I do and the projects I am involved with and
seek to provide services, events and literature that enhance well-being for
individuals, couples, families, the workplace, the community, the country
and the biosphere. I am a psychologist, psychodrama trainer and writer
and am currently an assistant instructor for Martin Seligman’s at the
University of Pennsylvania in their Masters of Applied Positive Psychology
program (MAPP). I’ve recently graduated this program and was previously a visiting faculty
member on fellowship at Princeton University. I am currently on faculty at New Jersey City
University in the psychology department where I teach, among other courses, positive
psychology.
In the mid-1980s I developed Interactive Behavioral Therapy model which is now the most
widely used form of group psychotherapy for people with intellectual and psychiatric
disabilities. I have won both the Innovator's and Scholar’s Award for its development and co-
authored the American Psychological Association’s first book on psychotherapy for people with
intellectual disabilities Healing Trauma: The Power of Group Treatment for People with
Intellectual Disabilities. As a result I was the first psychologist to be honored as Healthcare
Provider of the Year by the ARC of New Jersey and was recently appointed Executive Editor for
the Journal of Psychodrama, Sociometry, and Group Psychotherapy. I was also the lead author
of the DM-ID, Diagnostic Manual – Intellectual Disabilities chapter on Post-Traumatic Stress
Disorder.
My passion is writing and I am the author of The Healing Crowd for Psychology Today as their
expert blogger on group therapy. I also write Ask the Therapist and Proof Positive, a blog on
practical applications of positive psychology for PsychCentral.com. Sharecare recently honored
me as one of the top ten online influencers on the topic of depression.
Confessions of a Former Child: A Therapist’s Memoir, is my latest book, which won the 2009
Written Art Award in creative non-fiction. Sticks, Stones and the R word, won the International
play competition for the RETHINK Theater Challenge in 2010, and I have won the 2012
competition with the comedy: Negatively Oriented Therapy: N.O.T. that will premier October,
2012 in Auckland, New Zealand.
I have been in private practice in New Jersey for more than 25 years working with individuals,
couples and groups, and have developed the experiential workshop The Power of Positive Being
to advance group experiences of positive emotions.
