Position Description: Maternal/Child/Community Health Nursing Faculty (Tenure Track)
The Department of Nursing at California State University Bakersfield has an excellent undergraduate (BSN)
program with a focus on community engagement. We are seeking a dynamic Ph.D. prepared nursing faculty
member for a Maternal/Child/Community Health Nursing tenure-track position at the Assistant, Associate, or
Professor rank, depending on qualifications, beginning immediately.
This academic year position (10 month, 0.70 FTE) provides a unique opportunity to participate in the National
Children’s Study (NCS) Kern County location (0.30 FTE). The NCS will be one of the richest research efforts
geared towards studying children’s health and development and will form the basis of child health guidance,
interventions, and policy for generations to come. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to
collaborate with faculty from University of California, Irvine. This research, is a longitudinal study conducted
over 25 years, and is a fantastic opportunity to participate in ground breaking nursing research including data
gathering, analysis, and dissemination! Additional responsibilities consist of teaching nursing courses to nursing
majors including undergraduate laboratories, establishing a research trajectory in Maternal, Child, or Community
Health Nursing and initiating scholarly activities in the field of specialization, advising nursing students interested
in professionally related programs, supervising student research projects, and providing professionally-related
services to the department, university and community. Assigned time to establish research is available.
A Ph.D. in Nursing, or a Ph.D. in a related academic area and a Master’s degree in Nursing; the ability to teach
courses in related areas of expertise; evidence of a research trajectory in the area of Maternal, Child, or
Community Health Nursing and/or other areas of expertise; and a commitment to a quality nursing education
program are required.
The applicant must:
Have a minimum of two years teaching experience in Nursing in a baccalaureate or higher degree
Have experience or interest in technology-mediated instruction.
Have at least two years of full time clinical experience in Obstetrics, Pediatrics, and/or
Be eligible to hold an active, current and clear RN license to practice as a professional nurse in
Be eligible for approval as a Nursing Instructor and Content Expert at the California Board of
Possess the health qualifications to supervise and teach students in the clinical nursing setting.
Compensation: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The Department of Nursing is one of nine departments in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and
offers a B.S. in nursing. There are numerous tenure-track faculty lines and over 300 active nursing majors. The
department’s strengths include faculty who are highly dedicated to student success and community engagement.
A brand new state-of-the-art Nursing Simulation Center opened at CSU Bakersfield in March 2010.
CSUB was founded in 1970 as the 19th campus of the CSU system and currently has an enrollment of
more than 7,800 students. The University serves a socially and ethnically diverse population of ~
800,000 in an area of 10,000 square miles. The city of Bakersfield (population ~ 325,000) is located in
the southern San Joaquin Valley. Los Angeles, the Pacific Ocean, the Mojave Desert, the central
California coastal cities of San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay, and the Sierra Nevada mountains are all
within 2-1/2 hours drive from campus, and CSU Bakersfield is only five hours from San Francisco and
Las Vegas. Mountain resorts offering skiing in the winter are also nearby.
