1. Catalog description:
An advanced study of the development and implementation of
spreadsheets as applied to business applications, including worksheet
design, problem organization and results presentation.
2. Course content:
a. File management techniques
b. Review of spreadsheet basics
c. Web interaction
d. Advanced formula functions
e. Graphics
f. Three-dimensional workbooks
g. Forecasting and auditing spreadsheets
h. Data management
i. Macros
3. Student learning outcomes:
Students will learn the specialized body of knowledge relating to the
course content above. By the end of the course, the student should be
able to do the following:
a. Create spreadsheet files which include advanced functions and
macros
b. Download information from the internet and other files
c. Manipulate data lists
d. Create various charts
e. Analyze results, commenting on the workability of different options
4. Student assessment criteria:
Overall student performance will be assessed using various methods,
including tests, homework and a certification exam. Instructors will use
their discretion in determining the weighting of the various assessment
criteria.
Specific student learning outcomes identified in section three above will be
assessed through questions on exams and/or case analysis.
5. Program/department student learning outcomes assessed:
The following student learning outcomes will be assessed in the course
through the Microsoft Office certification exam.
a. Create formulas, including using advanced functions
b. Create charts and other graphics
c. Manipulate data lists and tables
d. Conditionally format data
e. Create data validations
In addition to the grade received for completing this assessment, an
assessment score noting the level of proficiency demonstrated also will be
recorded for program assessment purposes. Student performance will be
evaluated on a four-point scale, with values including accomplished (4),
proficient (3), partially proficient (2), and unacceptable (1).
Instructors must contact the department chair to obtain the current set of
assessment questions for this course (may vary from semester to
semester). These questions either must be embedded in the final exam for
the course or administered as a stand-alone assessment at the end of the
course.
6. Additional information:
a. Additionally, the course addresses three of the College of Business
and Economics core competencies:
Business knowledge and technical skills: Students will learn
the specialized body of knowledge relating to the course
content above.
Critical thinking skills: Students will be required to think
logically and to apply accounting and business concepts to
quantitative problems and conceptual issues.
Communication skills: Students will be required to apply
business communication skills to accounting data. Both
written and verbal communication may be assessed.
b. The contents of this syllabus in no way limit the individual instructor
from utilizing additional material deemed by the instructor to be
valuable to the student, so long as the topics listed in the course
content section are covered and the supplementary material is
relevant to and consistent with the course description.
