Gwalior- The Land of Art and Entertainment
Gwalior is a tourist city of the State of Madhya Pradesh. It has a
population of 1,200,000 according to the census of 2001. The city
is situated at a distance of 122 km from Agra, another tourist
location. From past times, the city has been able to attract military
establishments such as fortresses due to its central position. It is
now also considered one of the major military hubs and therefore,
the presence of Indian Air Force.
The city has a background that can be traced back to ancient times.
The city was founded by Surya Sen a prince of Madhya Pradesh. It
is said that while he was going on his way he met with an old man,
Gwalipa, who was very informative for him. The old man also
took the prince to a pond from where the prince took out some
water to drink. But to his astonishment the leprosy of the prince
vanished after inducting the pond’s water and therefore, the
importance of the place came into existence. Then a walled
compound was built around the ponds on the hills which later on
came to be known as Gwalior. Later on Surya Sen made his
residential palace in the hills of Gwalior.
The city of Gwalior is very rich in terms of culture. It is widely
famous for its historical architectures and art works. Many of these
works can be found in or around the city. Gwalior has an unbeaten
track record in the field of music. The greatest ever classical singer
and music composer, Baiju Bawara is from this great city.
Tansen’s ashes are buried in the premises of the city of Gwalior,
Tansen was a proficient music composer in the court of Akbar the
Great. Many festivals are celebrated in the city with lots of
enthusiasm and joy but there is especially one festival for music
lovers and that is Tansen Festival.
Climate and Geography of the city
The city is located in the northern part of the state of Madhya
Pradesh and occupies a central location at an elevation of around
197 meters from sea level. The climate here is pleasant all over the
year and it is great for the tourists to visit this city during any time
in the year. The sub-tropical climate affects the area with
monsoons coming in the month of June and leaving in October.
