Density
General Rules about Density
1. In general, solids are most dense, then liquids,
gases are least dense. Water is an exception
to this rule
2. Densities of solids and liquids are measured at
a certain temperature. Densities of gasses are
measured at a certain pressure.
3. Density is a physical, quantitative characteristic
of a substance (see Appendix D). Ex. At 20 oC,
zinc has a density of 7150 kg/m3.
Calculating Density
Density = mass
volume
Examples
1. A sample of iron has a mass of 100 kg
and displaces a volume of 0.0126 m3.
Determine the density
2. A density of a certain grade of petroleum
is 0.750 g/mL. What volume would be
occupied by 150 g of liquid?
Now do density problem set
Interpreting Graphs
Graphs are a great way of viewing a lot of
information at once. They show
generalities and trends but they also show
specific information or data.
Practice obtaining the density of a
substance from a line of best fit. Slope =
denisty. m= rise m= y2-y1
run x2-x1
