									                Lab Experiment – Capacitor Charging and discharging
Our objective:

      Is to see how the capacitor get charged and discharged using the oscilloscope.

      To measure the total time to charge and discharge a capacitor.

Equipment includes:

Signal generator, Wire connectors, integrated circuits that have capacitors and resistors,

oscilloscope.


Procedure:

1- Connect the oscilloscope to the signal generator in series to make sure that you can display the

three signals from the signal generator on the oscilloscope (checking step)


2- Then take the connection off and connect the circuit as the following, the red of the

oscilloscope to the red of the signal generator and to the resistor. Connect the other side of the

resistor to the capacitor and the other side of capacitor to the black of the signal generator.


3- Choose the square wave from the signal generator (it acts as a switch); see the signals how

they look like.


4- Trace the signals in your notebook and determine the charging and discharging parts.


5- Read the time using the oscilloscope, this will be the time to charge and discharge the

capacitor.


6- Repeat steps 3-5 by connecting different resistor.
7- Read the capacitance of your capacitor from the capacitor itself (this is in microfarads) and the

resistance from the resistor. Then using the definition of capacitive time constant, calculate the

total time to charge and discharge the capacitor,   T=CR
