HOW CAN PARENTS HELP? BEFORE THE TEST Look over your child’s homework on a daily basis and reinforce the importance of: 1. Writing in complete sentences 2. “Restating” the question in their answer 3. Numbering multi-step questions 4. Rereading questions or portions of the reading sample BEFORE or DURING the answering of questions 5. Participating in Before & After School Academic Help Sessions, when available Encourage your child to: 1. Read comics, magazines, newspapers, books, etc. 2. Tell you what they’ve read in their books, magazines, comics, etc. 3. Write thank you notes, emails to friends, grocery lists, journals about family vacations, etc. 4. Compare and contrast things in his/her environment, price of a meal, television shows that you watch, movies that you see, etc. ON THE DAY OF THE TEST Make sure your student gets a good night’s sleep! Provide a good breakfast of protein enriched “brain” food! Provide your student with a fresh supply of #2 pencils! Alleviate test anxiety by reinforcing previous preparations! BE POSITIVE - Tell your student you KNOW they will do well! Remind your student that you’ll be proud of them for putting forth their BEST EFFORT!
