For Continuing Supervisors: Education and Formations for Approved Supervisors
Field Education Program – Andover Newton Theological School
Approved supervisors who have already taken an introductory course in the ministry of
supervision have been equipped with theoretical and practical knowledge to help
supervise ministry students. In order to continually build upon that foundational
knowledge- fostering theologically reflective supervision and maintaining active contact
between the seminary and its partner supervisors- a number of continuing education
options are available. All approved, continuing supervisors who are working with a
student must participate in continuing education concurrently with supervision.
Option I: Case Study Reflection Group
This group of supervisors will meet on the Andover Newton Campus four times over the course
of the academic year in three-hour sessions. In each session, the group will consider a fictional
case that raises salient issues in the ministry of supervision.
All sessions take place on Thursdays from 10 a.m. - 1p.m. in the small dining room of lower
Noyes Hall. A complimentary lunch will be provided.

Option II: Online Course- LEARN
In the month of October, 2008, the Rev. Dr. Jeff Jones will lead an online discussion through
Andover Newton’s LEARN Program designed specifically for approved continuing supervisors.
He will use the book Leadership on the Line, by Ronald Heifetz, as the text for discussion.
Through the Web-based discussion tool Connect, Jeff will work with supervisors to consider the
“technical” and “adaptive’ challenges associated with leadership formation, specifically with
student ministers. Jeff has worked with Andover Newton students as a teacher of Ministerial
Leadership, field education supervisor, and the Director of Distance Learning for the seminary.
As an experienced online instructor, Jeff’s LEARN seminars have been welcomed wit great
excitement from pastor-participants for several years.
Option III: Intensive On-Campus Course- The Ministry of Mentoring
The Rev. Amy McCreath will teach a course on the ministry of mentoring. By reflecting on the
experience of being mentored, reflecting on the experience of mentoring others, and learning
more about the theology and praxis of mentoring, participant s will develop their capacities to
mentor effectively and creatively.
The Rev. Amy McCreath is the Lutheran-Episcopal Campus Minister for the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology and the Director of MIT’s Technology and Culture Forum. She is an
Andover Newton-trained field education supervisor who has worked with student ministers from
Andover Newton, Harvard, BU, and Episcopal Divinity School. In 2007 she used a sabbatical
grant from the Louisville Institute to conduct an extensive study on mentoring and ministry.

Option IV: Create Peer Reflection Group
Supervisors who learn best in a peer reflection setting can take advantage of this option
for continuing education. Those who opt for IV will receive notice in September of (1) a
location that can host meetings for those in the participants’ geographical region who
have chosen this option and, (2) the names and contact information for those other
participants. Peer supervisors will then select a time to meet at least four times over the
course of the academic year.
Option V: Waivers
Supervisors who wish to attend a conference, take a course, or participate in a peer
reflection group that closely mirrors any of the above options may seek a waiver of
the continuing education requirement. Please contact Sarah Drummond,
email@example.com or (617) 964-1100 x 230, to discuss this option.
