Job Description

Job Title:            Communications Officer - Coalition
Reporting to:         Advocacy and Communications Director

Job Context
There has never been a more exciting time in the charity’s history and significant changes
are about to take place. Not only are there plans to grow the impact of our work in the near
future, we are also leading the development of a new global alliance, Family for Every Child,
which will be launched in 2014. The alliance will achieve significantly greater impact for
children without parental care and will also be a lead player in the international arena,
demonstrating how change can be better led from developing countries.


Job Purpose

The post holder is responsible for the development and delivery of communications projects.
They belong to the Coalition Support Unit with experts on policy and advocacy and are also
part of a small team of specialists covering the areas of communications, digital
communications and media. This post is vital in building the profile and credibility of Family
for Every Child, planning for its launch in 2014 and supporting advocacy campaigns.

The post is crucial to delivering a consistent representation of Family for Every Child’s brand
and identity and building the profile and reputation of the brand new organisation with a
variety of global stakeholders. The role requires the post-holder to work closely with
colleagues on the Coalition Support Unit and also liaise with Coalition members, all
departments in the organisation and a number of external suppliers and freelancers to
source and collate varied information and communicate it effectively to internal and external
audiences.

Scope and Limits of Authority


Reporting to the Advocacy and Communications Director the post holder is required to
prioritise their own day to day work within the overall priorities and timescales set. They will
be expected to exercise sound judgement in many critical decision-making areas without any
direct support from Directors, Managers or other colleagues.

They are a communications specialist responsible for providing advice to their Manager and
Senior Managers on corporate communications issues. The post holder is responsible for
the consistent management of the messages and brand, delivery of all publications,
materials, online platforms, events and internal communications. They are expected to
receive approval from appropriate managers for all marketing materials.

The post holder is required to assess requirements for publications, literature, merchandise
and photography and make budgeting recommendations to the Advocacy and
Communications Director.


Key areas of responsibility

Contribute to the development and implementation of the Family for Every Child
communications strategy
    Seek and build on opportunities to enhance the strategy to maximise opportunities to
       grow profile and credibility amongst global decision and policy makers.
    Play a key role in implementing the communications strategy, keeping all
       stakeholders up to date with progress.
    Oversee the monitoring and evaluation of the communications strategy.

Provide communications support to the Family for Every Child advocacy and policy
team in order to meet advocacy and campaigns aims.
    Work closely with advocacy and policy colleagues to identify, suggest ideas for and
       develop communications activity to support advocacy priorities.
    Take a lead role in the dissemination of policy papers to relevant audiences. Support
       Coalition members with communications that contribute to their advocacy efforts and
       their representative role for Family for Every Child

Oversee the development and production of all of Family for Every Child’s
communications materials, e.g. publications, online content and merchandise
   1) Writing and editorial management and design of leaflets, presentations, online
      content and other materials as required.
   2) Copy proofing and managing the production of policy papers.
   3) Regular supervision, development and management of a number of external
      resources, including freelance copywriters, editors, photographers, designers, as well
      as printers and full service agencies.
   4) Plan and source Family for Every Child merchandise as required and manage the
      storage of such merchandise.
   5) Supervise and build relationships with key external suppliers and agencies.
   6) Develop and manage the photo and video library.
   7) Together with the Coalition Support Unit, develop a policy on visual images,
      commissioning photographers, cataloguing the photo library and monitoring the
      use of images across all communications.
   8) Oversee and organise content gathering trips if required. Liaise with the Coalition
      Programme Manager and Coalition members, to plan and put together visits to
      gather case studies, photos, films and sound recordings. Source volunteer
      photographers for these trips.

Support the establishment of Family for Every Child’s brand guidelines amongst
colleagues and members, to ensure that the brand is communicated consistently
throughout the global organisation and across all media and activities

   1) Advise all colleagues on the production of communication materials to ensure
      consistent brand identity.
   2) Support the Advocacy and Communications Director with the on-going
      development of identity and brand.
   3) Act as messaging guardian and champion for the global organisation, to ensure
      there is a consistent implementation of corporate identity, including creating
      guidelines, advising and monitoring others, and regularly reviewing and refining
      the organisation’s ‘look’, brand and messaging.

                                  Terms and conditions

Fixed term two year contract – with possibility of extension

   Salary package

£27,325 - 30,000 per annum




Annual leave

      25 days per year
      3 day winter closure
      8 days bank holidays
      Length of service award – 1 additional day annual leave for every year of
       service up to a maximum of 30 days.



   Sick leave

Sickness entitlement following completion of probation is 8 weeks full pay and SSP
for an additional 20 weeks within a 52 week period



   Study leave

Employees can apply for up to 10 days study leave per year as a part of our
professional development programme.
