similarities to the federal system of government, completing the wall organizer.
Transition Activity: Students will brainstorm details they remember from previous lessons
on the Pilgrims at Plymouth, Massachusetts and the creation of the Mayflower Compact.
Each will add to their own notes as they listen to other students share their details.
Learning Experience: Students will analyze the prompt together, using the CUTE acronym
(circle power words, underline key ideas, tell the answer and explain with examples.)
Ask students what the government was that ruled and protected the Pilgrims before they
reached Plymouth. List pros and cons of that government in order to appreciate situation of
Pilgrims who needed to set up safe residence before the winter, without advantages or
difficulties of the King’s government.
Students will complete the desk organizer showing similarities between the Mayflower
Compact and the Constitution of the United States.
Students will use ER organizer to plan extended response answer as a group.
Lesson Wrap Up: Students write the Extended Response answer, given a 25 minute time
period and their brainstorming notes. If students are new to the ER format, the writing
should be done as a class, noting the time passing as it is written.

When the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth, they signed a document called the Mayflower
Compact. Describe the significance this had in our experience of government in the New
