1. This analysis will come from the General Social Survey(Survey Documentation and Analysis,
CSM, 2004). Download the data set ABORTION from the M Drive. The dependent variable is
“Please tell me whether or not you think it should be possible for a pregnant woman to obtain a
legal abortion if the woman wants it for any reason?” Independent variables include age, sex, and
how often the respondent attends religious services.

2. Recode age into a new variable using the following categories: 18-29, 30-44, 45-59, and 60+.
Call it age2 and label it appropriately (variable and value labels).

3. Test the following hypotheses:

A. Men are more accepting of abortion (abany) than women (sex).
Results: Acceptance of abortion by men = ____%, women = ____%;

B. Acceptance of abortion is greater among the less religious (attend). Recode attend
into two categories: those who attend once a week or more often vs. the rest. Relabel

2. Create a report on a new page. Write a title, then put your table under it. Under it include a
narrative consisting of a paragraph for each independent variable (sex, frequency of religious
attendance, and age; then one describing the interaction of sex and age). In each paragraph
describe the relationship between each independent variable and acceptance of abortion and

include its Chi Square analysis (and p), and include a proposed explanation. Do not simply repeat
numbers from the table.

3. The point of this exercise is to illustrate the “elaboration model” to show how simple
relationships can be further “explained” by a third variable. Discuss how this happens when you
include age in examining sex differences -- in a separate paragraph that describes and explains.
