                                                        Lab Recommendations

       Science Standard 7:
      Standard Investigation and Experimentation
Hands on science experiences should compose 20 percent of instructional time (one day per week).

Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations. As a
7 basis for understanding this concept and addressing the content in the other three strands, students
should develop their own questions and perform investigations. Student will:

         7.a Develop a hypothesis.

7.b Select and use appropriate tools and technology.

7.c Construct appropriate graphs from data and develop qualitative statements about relationships between
                     variables.

7.d Communicate the steps and results from an investigation in written reports and oral presentations.

7.e Recognize whether evidence is consistent with a proposed explanation.

7.f Read a topographic map and a geologic map for evidence provided on maps and construct and interpret
                     a simple scale map.

7.g Interpret events by sequence and time from natural phenomena (e.g., the relative ages of rocks and
                     intrusions).

7.h Identify changes in natural phenomena over time without manipulating the phenomena.

During lab experiences, students need to have the opportunity to design investigations, engage in scientific
Lab Activities reasoning, manipulate equipment, record data, analyze results, and discuss and record their findings. Lab
                     investigations should:

~ include all parts of the scientific method, from predicting/developing a hypothesis to analyzing data and
                       reporting results.
~ have a purpose that connects to an instructional objective.
~ incorporate student reflection and discussion.
~ enable students to practice safe lab habits and procedures.

Glencoe fuses inquiry into labs in several places, allowing teachers the flexibility to use these strategies as much or as little as they would like.
Through connecting with the students and their prior experiences and by asking questions that the students can connect to themselves, the text, and
other labs within the content area, the students can reach scientific conclusions on their own, and ultimately, truly understand the science.
