We are looking for a Human Resources Officer to join our HR Department, to cover the maternity
leave of a member of our team. Working closely with the Director of HR and a strong team of HR
Officers you will provide generalist HR support and advice on a wide range of HR issues and
provide a first-class service to users.

You will be educated to degree level, CIPD qualified and have relevant previous experience in a
professional HR role. You will have an in-depth understanding of employment legislation and HR
best practice. You will have high professional standards, the ability to communicate effectively and
the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.

Leeds Trinity University College:

Leeds Trinity University College is a higher education institution located on the outskirts of Leeds.
Originally established as two colleges in 1966, which merged in 1980, we have over 40 years’
experience of delivering programmes of higher education accredited by the University of Leeds.
We have recently been awarded taught degree awarding powers (TDAP) and hope to achieve
university status in the near future. We currently have 3,800 students and approximately 400 staff.
Our higher education programmes cover a diverse range of subjects (teacher education, childhood
and youth studies, sport, nutrition, English, history, theology, media, journalism, marketing,
business and management) and include programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
We have ambitious plans for developing our estate and growing our student numbers. All staff
have access to our well-stocked learning resource centre and our newly refurbished sport and
fitness centre.

Human Resources Department:

The Human Resources Department was established in 1998 and currently consists of a Director of
Human Resources, six Human Resources Officers and two Human Resources Administrators.
We are a strong and supportive team with both strategic and operational functions and we work
together to provide a high quality HR service to the University College. The Director is a member
of the University College’s senior management team and has responsibility for HR strategy and
the management of the department. The six Human Resources Officers have generalist roles with
some specialist responsibilities (eg. casework, recruitment, HRIS, staff development, pay and

We are now seeking to recruit a Human Resources Officer to work in our team and to cover a
period of maternity leave. The postholder will have a generalist portfolio and will take
responsibility for an area of HR work. S/he will have a structured induction programme which will
include time to develop an understanding of the University College’s HR policies and procedures,
and training on the HR information system.

Annual Leave:

We offer an annual leave entitlement of 25 days plus an additional 15 days’ leave for bank/public
holidays and University College closure days (i.e. 40 days in total) (or pro-rata equivalent).

Paid Leave for Domestic and Personal Reasons:

All staff have an entitlement of up to 3 days (or pro rata equivalent) paid leave for domestic and
personal reasons.


The Human Resources Officer will be eligible to join the West Yorkshire Pension Scheme.


The Human Resources Officer will have access to personal and confidential information which
must not be disclosed or made available to any unauthorised person. Breaches in confidentiality
may lead to disciplinary action.

JOB TITLE:                   Human Resources Officer (Maternity Cover)

GRADE:                       Grade 7 (points 30 – 36)

SALARY RANGE:                £30,122 - £35,938 per annum

HOURS OF WORK:               Your hours of work will be 35 hours per week Monday to Friday 9.00
                             am to 5.00 pm with one hour unpaid break for lunch each day.

                             Holders of posts at this level are expected to work the hours
                             necessary for the full performance of the duties outlined below,
                             subject to a minimum of 35 hours per week.

RESPONSIBLE TO:              Director of Human Resources.

RESPONSIBILITY:              HR Administrative staff as required.

INTERNAL CONTACTS:           Human Resources staff; Principal; Deputy Principal; Finance Officer;
                             Heads of Department; lecturing staff; support staff.

EXTERNAL CONTACTS:           Consultants;     trainers;   recruitment     agencies;     government

PURPOSE OF THE POST: 1.            To make a significant contribution to the work of the HR

2.   To assist the Director of Human Resources in the implementation of the HR Strategy and
     other related strategies and plans.

3.   To participate as required in the management of the HR Office, systems and administrative
     processes, including the management of human resources information systems.

4.   To participate as required in the management of HR casework.

5.   To liaise as required with University College managers, advising them on HR issues and
     keeping them informed of relevant current employment legislation.

6.   To liaise with legal advisers and provide advice accordingly.
7.    To assist in identifying, developing and implementing initiatives designed to facilitate the
      continuous improvement of HR services within the University College.

8.    To develop and maintain systems of staff records, gathering, processing, monitoring and
      disseminating information as required, working with HR colleagues to ensure currency and

16.   To participate in, and advise on, matters relating to staff welfare and health, referring
      individuals promptly to appropriate services.

17.   To participate as required in the management of staff attendance.

18.   To service committees/meetings as required from time-to-time.

19.   To participate as required in the development, implementation and operation of reward
      strategies, policies and procedures.

20.   To participate in the management of recruitment and selection processes, including
      interviewing, testing and briefing candidates.

21.   To participate in the management of staff development processes, including the identification
