Title: Little Me in the Big City
GRADE LEVEL: 3rd grade
Idea (Description): Imagine that you are two inches tall. Write a one page story
(narrative) to describe what you might experience if you went for a walk or took a
bus ride in New York City. How would it feel to be the size of Stuart Little on the
streets of such a big city? What exciting things might you see? What dangers might
you come across?
Activity: Using a pencil, draw a picture of yourself, as if you are two inches tall.
Use a ruler to make sure you have drawn yourself an accurate measurement. Also,
include other details from your narrative that you may also see if you are taking a
stroll or riding a bus in New York City. Color your picture using a variety of
materials provided by the teacher.
Fine Arts CONNECTION: QCC standard for Artistic Skills and knowledge:
Performing and Producing standard: Uses a variety of materials and techniques to
model, construct, and compose original artwork.
Georgia Performance Standard:
ELA3W2: The student begins to write in a variety of genres, including
narrative, informational, persuasive, and response to literature. Critical
component: The student produces a narrative that: a. captures a reader’s
interest by writing both personal and fantasy/imaginary stories, setting a
purpose, and developing a point of view.
Other CONNECTIONS: Georgia Performance Standard:
S3CS4: Students will use ideas of system, model, change, and scale in exploring
scientific and technological matters.

The play section or book chapter related to the CREATIVE IDEA/ACTIVITY:
Chapter 3 and 6 from the Stuart Little book.
Materials: Each student will need construction paper, a pencil, a ruler, and access to
crayons, markers, water color paint, and a paintbrush.
Directions/ Procedures: For Language Arts Connection:
Students will work independently to create a narrative.
Students will write a one page narrative on the following criteria: Imagine that you
are two inches tall. Write a one page story (narrative) to describe what you might
experience if you went for a walk or took a bus ride in New York City. How would
it feel to be the size of Stuart Little on the streets of such a big city? What
exciting things might you see? What dangers might you come across?
Directions/ Procedures: For Fine Arts Activity:
Students will create art that correlates with their narrative.
Using a ruler measuring inches, the student will draw themselves being two inches
Students will also draw people, animals, buildings, cars, and other objects that they
wrote about in their narrative.
The student is to use a variety of art materials, such as: crayons, markers, or water
colors to complete their artwork.
Estimated Time: 45 minutes
Technology Connections: After completing the art project and with the teacher’s
permission, students can use the internet to research and find pictures of New York
City in the early 1970’s (the time period when the book was published). They can
compare the pictures that they have found on the internet to the picture that they
