File this story under “man bites dog” or “Villanova beats Georgetown”. Congratulations to the 8th
grade soccer team for making history last week. They defeated the staff team by the narrowest of
margins (5-2). Led by the goaltending of Benji Kaneda and a hat trick from Justin O’Brien, the
students were able to overcome the sublime goaltending of Mr. Weinrib and knock the teachers
from the ranks of the undefeated. Additional goals were scored by Mike Hall and Lindsey
Ewertsen, Mr. Freedman (his 10th of all time) and Mr. Cespedes (barely). Highlights are available
on Prime Time, Glenfield’s daily newscast.
Speaking of tv shows…Glenfield Middle School’s Technology Learning Center will be featured
on NJN’s Classroom Close-up on October 16, November 15 and November 20 at 7p.m. on NJN.
Next week, all 6th grade students will complete their Learnia assessment in both Language Arts
and Math. Learnia is a formative assessment which provides teachers with an academic profile of
our incoming students. Portions of the assessment (one class period) will be completed in the
computer lab and the other, open-ended segment will be completed “in house.” To measure
academic growth (value-added), Learnia will also be administered in the spring. If you have any
additional questions, please contact your child’s L.A. or Math teacher.
Looking ahead: the world-famous Glenfield PTA will, once again, be sponsoring the annual Black

are still $.50 or $1.00 – the best bargain in town! Parent co-coordinators Inga Van Siclen
email@example.com and Alison Hurlock firstname.lastname@example.org are still looking for volunteers to
work that evening.
Reminder: the PTA Innisbrook Gift-Wrap Fundraiser has been extended one week! Please
support this wonderful event as it supports teacher mini-grants and Read Your Way Scholarships.

Kids Corner II: On Saturday, October 2nd, current and former Glenfield students joined together with staff
for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night walk in Verona Park. They were all part of
“Team Peknay” (Matt Peknay-House Scribner-Glenfield ’10). With more than 75 students and staff
walking, over $3500 was raised for research and to help those with blood cancers. It was a wonderful
night with plenty of school spirit and Glenfield pride.
