1 Introduction
This document provides an overview of the design of the DICE control plane test
circuit to be used for interoperation testing of the AutoBAHN implementation of the
DICE control plane interface to DRAGON/OSCARS.

The domains (and BoD systems) participating in this testing are HEAnet
(AutoBAHN), GÉANT2 (AutoBAHN), PSNC (AutoBAHN), ESnet (OSCARS),
HOPI (DRAGON). The aim of these tests is to demonstrate the ability to create an
on-demand transatlantic circuit using AutoBAHN, OSCARS and DRAGON.

This test circuit terminates on a client in HEAnet and a client in HOPI.

Each domain uses a different transmission technology. In GÉANT2, Alcatel SDH
cross connect equipment is used to provide Ethernet private line circuits. In HEAnet,
an Ethernet service is provided by MPLS over Ethernet. The HOPI test network is
controlled using DRAGON provisions circuits using GMPLS. The HOPI network is
implemented using wavelength switched circuits overlaid with Ethernet switches.

An overview of the demonstration connectivity is depicted in the following diagram.

This document describes the connectivity of data plane and the control plane in detail.

2 Data plane
The data plane is to be a Gigabit Ethernet circuit from one client located in Dublin to
a second in (?). For the SuperComputing conference in Reno this client may be
moved to a booth in the conference floor (?).

When transiting GÉANT2, circuit provisioning is performed using the ISN interface
to the Alcatel NMS. Since the ISN interface is as yet untested, it is not considered
suitable for use in the GÉANT2 production network. For this reason, the dynamically

controlled part of the circuit will be restricted to the section of the circuit that transits
GÉANT2 testbed.


2.1 GÉANT2 data plane connectivity
The GÉANT2 testbed has no co-located point of presence with either GRNET,
HEAnet, PSNC or HOPI. This requires the circuit to be extended with from the
testbed to these networks. For the connection NRENs circuit extensions are
implemented as static Gigabit Ethernet private lines over the GÉANT2 production
network. The interconnect point is native Gigabit Ethernet.

Figure 1 shows an overview of the end-to-end connectivity of circuit, with an
emphasis on the details within the GÉANT2 domain.

The GÉANT2 testbed consists of five Alcatel 1678MCC SDH cross-connects. These
are located in London, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt and Prague. The connectivity
between MCCs is provided by 10Gbit/s STM-64 wavelengths provided by the
GÉANT2 dark fibre infrastructure.

The trail from Dublin to Paris is static and based on a VC-4-7v trail. Similarly, the
trail from London to MANLAN will be a static VC-4-7v trail. The connections
between the domains are summarised in the following table:

The interconnects between networks use 1000baseSX in Dublin and the transatlantic
STM-64 from Paris to NY. The interconnection between the testbed and GÉANT2
are 1000baseSX in Paris and STM-64 in London.

The dynamic part of the circuit is also a VC-4-7v trail which extends from London to
Paris either direct or via Frankfurt and Prague.

Since the current implementation of ISN interface used to provision trails only
provides connections between GE ports (and not STM-64 timeslots), a loop in
London provides a termination point for the dynamic link to Paris and the static link
to NY.

Two VC-4-7v trails will be requested by the IDM via the ISN. These will both go
from London to Paris. The first trail will use up all of the available capacity on the
Lon-Par link. The second trail will then be rejected by the Network.



2.2 HEAnet data plane connectivity

HEAnet host details are:
A 2.4GHZ PC with 1Gb of memory and 2 x 1GE Ethernet NICs running Ubuntu
Linux. On of the GE NICs terminates the GE data plane, the other connects to the
internal HEAnet IP network.


2.3 HOPI data plane connectivity

3 Control Plane
Two levels of control plane connectivity are required. Within AutoBAHN, IP tunnels
are provided between each of the participating networks to provide an IDM-IDM
control plane. The DICE control plane is implemented between AutoBAHN,
OSCARS and DRAGON.

One IDMs is installed each AutoBAHN domain. The DM and IDM functions are co-
located on one server (srv2.lon.uk.geant2.net in the case of London). IDM-to-IDM
communication is provided by a mesh of IP tunnels between IDMs.

Each domain has one server running the IDM client and a reduced functionality DM
client. The network topology for each domain will be manually entered into the IDM
topology database. A web based GUI has been developed and used for entering path
requests.

Each control domain (OSCARS, DRAGON and AutoBAHN) will implement at least
one inter domain controller (IDC) which will support a DICE control plane interface.



3.1 IDM-IDM Control Plane tunnels
IP connectivity between the IDMs will be provided using GRE tunnels. This is
required to ensure that the OSPF protocol operates correctly.

3.2 DICE Control Plane connectivity
Control plane connectivity between Internet2/ESnet and GÉANT2 are performed via
a web services information exchange. The details of servers, IP addresses and ports
used are listed here.

Two ports are used: 8080 port (for non-secure communication) and 8443 (for secure

3.3 GÉANT2 control plane connectivity

Private address access to the LSPs is provided via VLAN number 11 as described in
the following table. The public access is provided via VLAN 71.
