FBLA STATE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
2009 HOTLINE
The purpose of the Hotline is to keep advisers abreast of any changes to this year’s State Leadership
Conference. This information supersedes any previous information received either in the State
Leadership Conference registration packet and/or the Colorado FBLA Operations Manual. Please
check the Colorado FBLA website regularly (www.fbla-pbl.cccs.edu) for additional updates.
The adviser assignments, which indicate each adviser’s responsibilities during the conference,
will be sent out soon. All advisers are expected to attend their respective assignments and arrive
15 minutes prior to the scheduled event time. Furthermore, all advisers are expected to provide a
chaperone for the dance. Attendance, input, and cooperation are required to provide the best
possible State Leadership Conference. Adviser assignments will be sent out prior to conference.
Bus Parking: the Donovan Pavilion Parking lot will be reserved for the use of the school buses.
This is just west of the Vail Cascade.
Conference Registration: You may pick up your registration materials in conference
headquarters, which is in the Mountain View Room at the Vail Cascade, main level, upon arrival.
Those arriving on Saturday may pick up your registration when you arrive.
A mandatory advisers meeting will begin at 11:30 am at the Cascade hotel, Centennial Ballroom
DEF. Any additional schedule and event changes will be outlined at this meeting. The success of
competitors hinges upon receiving correct information at the mandatory adviser meeting. Any
changes to the schedule outlined at this meeting supersede the original agenda. Due to the
increase of costs we are unable to provide lunch this year.
Due to facility changes and event updates, the updated conference schedule is TENTATIVE.
Competitive Events: Students must provide their own #2 pencils. Calculators for competitive
events will be provided. Students must use these calculators. Come with sharpened pencils
since sharpeners are not available. Please review competitive event guidelines in the National
and Colorado Operations Manuals prior to the conference.
Voting Delegates: There are no proposed bylaw changes this year, so voting will not be
necessary for the voting delegates. They will be expected to attend the workshops and the events
that are open to observers.
Conference Observers: Please make certain that your conference observers are busy with
conference activities. You may want to provide a worksheet for the students to complete, and
turned in to you at the conclusion of the conference.
Workshops: Workshops are planned for both Sunday and Monday. Encourage your students to
attend. It is required that members attend at least two workshops. You may wish to set your own
guidelines that exceed the two workshops. The students will have two name tags. One is to be
used for a workshop stamp. Students are to use only one of the tags for workshops. Once they
receive their two stamps, they are to submit to you and then to conference headquarters. The
other tag will allow them into events and sessions.
Exhibits: We will have many businesses and schools exhibiting at the Exhibit Session, Monday
from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Vail Cascade, Cascade Ballroom. Please encourage your
students to attend. Door prizes are given by many of the exhibitors as well as Colorado FBLA.
March of Dimes Mini Walk: We will again have the mini-walk for March of Dimes on Sunday at
2:00. The walk will begin at the courtyard south of the Cascade Conference Center. Donation of
$5.00. This will be accepted as a workshop. Casual attire is allowed.
Colorado FBLA Relief Fund Mini Walk: New this year. The walk will begin at the courtyard
south of the Cascade Center on Monday at 12:30. Donation of $5.00. It will conclude at the
Cascade Ballroom.
Hotel confirmations come directly from the hotels. ALL rooms must be paid for upon check-
out. If you are requesting tax exemption, bring a copy of your school district’s tax exempt
certificate to submit with payment. Checks and credit cards must match the school district name
on the tax exempt certificate. Personal checks and credit cards will void tax exemption.
Remember: Rooms may not be available upon arrival. Come prepared for
competition! It is our hope that one room will be available upon check in.
Last year we had property damage at two of the hotels. It is important that we all
supervise all students and maintain a positive image and relationship with the
hotels. Any chapter reported for ANY damages will be placed on suspension and
will endanger their involvement at the 2009 National Conference and the 2009-2010
State FBLA events.
It is too late to cancel a room at this time. Colorado FBLA would then be responsible
for payment of the cancelled room, and Colorado FBLA will NOT absorb this
expense.
Dress code for the conference will be in effect at all conference activities except for the dance on
Monday evening and the Walk-a-Thons on Sunday and Monday (Denim may be worn for both
activities). The dress code in its entirety can be found in the Colorado Operations Manual. Simply
stated:
Males: dress slacks (cargo and carpenter pants are inappropriate), dress shirt with collar,
tie, dress socks and dress shoes. NO TENNIS SHOES
Females: business dress, business suit or pantsuit with blouse, skirt or dress slacks with
blouse or sweater, dress shoes. Skirt length must be appropriate for BUSINESS
attire. Gaucho pants and capri pants may be worn if they are part of a suit and
pants are below the knee.
To avoid your student being embarrassed, humiliated, or denied entrance, please enforce
the above dress code. If in doubt, don’t allow. Students will be asked to go back to their
room to change, and will not be given more time to complete the test.
No one (advisers, guests, students) will be allowed to attend any session without an FBLA name
tag. If you have parents or administrators attending the Awards Session, please send me names
so name tags will be available in your registration packet. All guests must dress in appropriate
business attire or they will be denied entrance.
If you have any questions or are unsure about anything, please check with Conference
Headquarters or a Board member before deciding on a course of action, especially when
administering an event or advising a student.
In order to maintain professionalism, all chapters should remain at the closing session until
adjourned. Early departure violates proper business etiquette and sets a poor example for our
future business leaders. Take Home packets will be distributed at 7:00 a.m. in Conference
Headquarters.
Business Plan, Business Financial Plan, E-Business, Internet Application Programming, Desktop
Application Programming, American Enterprise, Future Business Leader and Partnership with
Business will not have preliminary rounds.
Curfew: Curfew is at 11:00 pm, Sunday and midnight, Monday. Students are to be in their own
room. Pizza will not be delivered after this time.
Stand Up For Kids: Battle Mountain High School will be accepting donations for Stand Up for
Kids. If you have donations, please bring to the Cascade prior to the adviser meeting. Students
from Battle Mountain will be in the lobby to collect your donations. THANK YOU for your support.
Dance: There will be a dance, Monday night at the Dobson Arena. Admission is $2.00. Casual
attire is allowed, but please remind the students that attire must be appropriate. If not, the
students will not be allowed admission.
Battle of the Chapters: For those students who do not prefer the dance, we will have a quiz
bowl at the Marriott, Colorado Ballroom during the time of the dance. Admission is $2.00. Attire is
the same as the dance.
National Leadership Conference: Registration is due May 4. Please notify the state office if
your qualifier will or will not be attending by April 27.
It is our hope that the snow will not be a problem for our weekend and we will have clear blue
skies. The show will go on regardless of the weather.
