                                     MATHS DEPARTMENT
The Maths Department at Pontypridd High School is forward-looking, successful department with
a good record of success at all Key Stages. In the November 2008 Inspection, the department was
one of the departments inspected and was awarded Grade 2 at Key Stage 3, a ‘striking’ Grade 1 at
Key Stage 4 and grade 2 at Key Stage 5. Overall the school was awarded grade 1 in all 7 Key
Questions. In 2011, 66% of students achieved level 5 or above at Key stage 3, 50% of students
achieved A*-C at GCSE level and 99% achieved A*-G.
The department comprises seven full-time specialist teachers. Members of the department teach
across the age and ability range in seven dedicated Maths rooms. This vacancy has arisen due to
the increase in pupil numbers in the school.
In Years 7-9, pupils are set in parallel half year groups. The school operates a 25 period weekly
timetable with pupils in Years 7 and 9 having three one hour lessons of Maths and pupils in Year 8
having four one hours. In Year 10 and 11 pupils are straight set and have four and three one hour
lessons respectively. Years 10 and 11 follow the WJEC Linear.
‘AS’ and ‘A’ level Maths is a popular option in Years 12 and 13 and Further Maths is also offered.
Students follow the AQA course and modules are offered in Core, Mechanics, Statistics, Decision
Maths and Further Pure Maths.
This is an outstanding opportunity to join an already successful department and make a significant
contribution to the success of the whole school. The successful candidate will join an experienced,
committed department, which shares good practice and strives to excel in all we do. We are
looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and hardworking colleague to help us build on our success. A
new member of the department can expect to receive encouragement, professional guidance and
support from the whole department.

We look forward to hearing from you.

R Carter-Evans (Head of Mathematics)
