PTA Meeting
Northfield Elementary, 7PM

Gina Galbreath called the meeting to order at 7:05PM.

President: We would like to amend our bylaws for days and times of PTA meetings. We normally
have the 3rd Wednesday. We would like to move these meetings and we need to turn these in
soon. Feedback is welcome.
Norton Cybersafe has a contest and we need to sign people up to receive up to 20,000 of the
contest prize. A sheet came home in the blue folder.
We also have the Subway card if anyone is interested. They are coded to our school. You put your
own money on it and proceeds come back to the school.
The ink cartridge contest, Mrs. Hoon is in first place at 92 collections. 2nd place is Mrs. Bailey’s class.
This ends November 13th.

Secretary: Minutes approved. Debra Flynn 1, Cindi Freyhauf 2. Read a thank you from first grade
teachers for their mini grant.

Treasurer: We made almost 50% on the entertainment books. That is all we have to add to the
budget. We have a couple of budget amendments. Movie night is this Friday and we had
budgeted for $300.00 and we came in at $200.00. I’ll move $100.00 to game night. We are going
to do a wii game challenge with best buy. There is also the summer book program that we aren’t
doing this year. Due to the entertainment book sale, we will increase the mini-grant budget by
$2000.00. Approved.

Dr. Muffley, Principal’s report, Smartboard Presentation
As I have watched instruction grow and change in the building, I have realized that I needed to
get up to speed—especially in technology. Mrs. Kecsketmety had the idea to have a class for
college credit, set up through Notre Dame college and as our final project we had to do
something that would be useful in our classroom. We are at a turning point at Northfield. When I
came here 3 years ago, we did not have technology. We used to have a plan in place where a
teacher would have to write a proposal for a grant. What we are doing now here is unbelievable.
We have a SMARTboard in each classroom at Northfield. The teachers work in teams to learn
about the technologies and to be able to use them in their classrooms. Our presentations tonight
were interactive. Technology is not a replacement for good instruction—it adds to it.
Demonstration of slides
Everyday Math books are in PDF so we can show those and write on them. In 4th grade I got the
SMARTboard first. If someone wants to add to the lessons I created, they can do that. We have a
shared drive on which we post information.

Council Report, Tiffany Madden
We have an opportunity to raise money for a specific item for Northfield and I emailed Gina the
item that we could use. We needed bookshelves for the library. Place your receipts at ChickFilA in
the designed can for Northfield and 10% of your bill will go to your school of choice. If you go
through the drive-thru, just tell them what your school of choice is. It’s October 30 thru December
15th. If we are the highest school earned, we will get double! January thru April we can do a
Northfield spirit night there as well. We are looking for PTA Installation Dinner themes. We will also
get a list for Santa Breakfast for donations from local businesses.

Committee Reports:
Entertainment books: we sold 473 books which was closer enough that the rep let us meet the 500
book pricing so we earned 50%. Our profit was 7090.00.
Book Fair: 1 free book, $5 or less will be given at this book fair.
BoxTops: Over the summer and September, we are ahead 2738 from last year. I will submit
October 31st as well. Deana Kuenzel will be taking over BoxTops after this meeting. Class winner for
September was Mrs. Natali’s class, Logan Shaffer, Natali, Kara Freyhauf, Hoon, Carson Paluscsak,
Bass
Conferences: For those of you who do not know, the 2 big nights of conferences we do
conference dinners. We feed them to save them time and hassle. We like to set up by 3:30PM.
November 12th is International night. Cook something from your nationality! We are looking at
about 30 staff members to feed and our secretaries. the 19th is soup, salad, sandwich night.
Market Day: First market day went well. We were a few orders short from last year. We had 84
orders this year, 87 last year. For October, last we had 66 orders and we have 71 this year.
November is bonus pie and dessert month. The goal is 500 desserts and that would help us reach
our goal. We received donations from ChickFilA and target for this contest. 1 pie, you get an
animal pencil topper eraser. 5 or more, ChickFilA meal. 10 or more—top 2 sellers, $25.00 target
card. November 19th is pickup.
Red Ribbon Week: Wristbands, coloring sheet, Thursday wear RED.
Spiritwear: Orders will be in time for the holidays. You can pick them up in the office.
Membership: We’re slowing down, but we did get 27% more members than last year. 4 rooms had
100% and 3 had over 100%. Miss Ventre, Mrs. Gruber, Mrs. Bailey. That’s it! A special thank you to
Cindy Matyus for getting all of the prizes.

Staff report: Mrs. Kecskemety
Our third graders just went to the Macedonia City Center and had a good time. The 4 th grade
went to the Cuyahoga Valley. The kids really enjoyed it. We had a 4th grade fund raiser and raised
3000.00. That field trip comes up at the end of May. We go the Thursday before Memorial Day. 12
staff members from Northfield finished the SMARTboard course. I was the teacher, but they taught
me a lot! We are looking forward to the conference dinners. We got an $11,000 technology grant.
We wanted more parent involvement in math. We want to know how you feel about helping your
kids at home with math. We have an assembly on November 9th with the Arithmetickles. The
students will attend 2 different assemblies on the 9th and then a family assembly will also be
provided at the high school. You will get a special invitation for this in the blue folders next week.
The other part of the grant is the everyday math online games. We are the only school in the
district that has these games.
Lauren Zaun is doing her administrative internship with me this year. We wanted to expand
Veterans Day activities with the kids. This year we talked about having a program and inviting
veterans on November 11th. We need to get a read on who would be here to do this.

Old Business: We are gearing up the garden club for spring. This will be outside Mrs. Kecskemety
room. PTA was asked to help maintain it. That will come out in early 2010.

We have 1 mini grant for Mrs. Witt. This is for the school: purchase the pillars of character DVD
series and add to the library collection. Teach and reinforce pillars of character at Northfield.
Approve for 220.00. Approved.

Nicole Paluscsak: Holiday Shop was not on the agenda, but we need someone to help head up
Holiday Shop. I did get a box of information for this. I have 2 people who helped me last year and
are willing to help. We will need someone to inventory, set up and be responsible to take
inventory to send it in. It’s December 1-4.

PTA family week incentive—chance to win prize money by doing a promotion the week of
February 7th. It could be grade level, during the school day, evening, etc.--if you have an idea
that involves family, let me know.

Adjournment: 8:10PM
