Grading Policy and Information:

1) I will evaluate student work based on effort-which will receive a grade no lower than fifty (50)-as
opposed to a non-motivational zero (0). I determine the level of effort. If an assignment is not
handed in, then a zero (0) will be awarded.
2) Late work and make-up work procedures: A students who misses assignments or due dates
because of absences whether excused or unexcused will be allowed to make up the work. Arrangements
for completing the work should be made within five (5) school days and include a schedule for its
completion. Credit for the late work will be awarded according the following guidelines:
a. If the student was present in class on the due date, the work will be given a 70%.
b. If the student was not present on the due date because of an excused absence,
full credit can be earned.
c. If the student was not present on the due date because of an unexcused absence,
the work will be given a 70%.
3) Students will be provided an opportunity to demonstrate mastery by retaking/redoing any failed
formal assessments. Failing grades can be improved in this manner up to a maximum of 80%.
4) Assignment Types:
Formal Assessments-45% of Quarter grade: Tests, Projects and Computer work
Informal Assessments-45% of quarter grade: Notebook checks, Quizzes, Activities
Homework-10% Quarter grade
Interactive Science Notebook:
You are required to maintain an Interactive Science Notebook. This is where
you complete your notes, warm-up activities, vocabulary work, activities, class work and some homework
assignments. This is also where you staple or glue in any worksheets and handouts. Please keep it up to
date and avoid using blank sheets for other classes. I will be checking your notebook for
organizations and completeness twice a quarter for a quiz grade. Some individual assignments will be
graded separately as they are assigned.
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for keeping up with your work. If you are absent for any reason, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE
for getting your makeup assignments turned in before the quarter ends. Before asking me for your missing
work, please check your agenda, the Table of Contents bulletin board in class and my wiki.
Computer Work: There will be assignments throughout the year where you are required to complete an
assignment using an online program. These will count as a test grade. If you do not have access to a reliable
Internet source, special arrangements can be made. MORE INFORMATION TO FOLLOW.
I am available on Tuesday mornings 8:15 to 8:45 and Wednesday after school until 5:00 in my classroom for
student help. This is usually used for makeup work, review for quizzes and tests, and general tutoring. The students
can earn up to 7% extra credit each quarter for productive participation. Since there are usually several students
present, this is probably not an appropriate time for parent conferences. Please remember that our school has
a before school program for those who just need a place for their student to wait until school starts.
