BASIC FUNCTION:

  To provide American Sign Language interpreting for students who are deaf or hard of
  hearing in the academic setting and university functions. Supervise, schedule and
  coordinate contract interpreters for campuses classes and events. Maintain compliance
  with federal and state mandates regarding accommodation of students who are deaf or
  hard of hearing.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  Provide interpretation of class instruction and university activities with American Sign
  Language for students who are deaf or hard of hearing; provide backup for absent
  interpreters, seek professional development opportunities, engage in fostering
  successful team relationships within interpreting staff, and oversee quality assurance
  of interpreting services.

  Supervise and manage contract interpreters, work with interpreters to assess and
  develop skills, act as point of contact, mediate conflicts, consult with appropriate
  persons regarding the interpreting situation to determine issues such as placement and
  adaptations necessary to interpret effectively.

  Schedule and coordinate interpreters for campus classes and events and development
  of office services information.

  Maintain and update practices and policies for interpreters, students, and Student
  Accessibility Services (SAS) as it relates to interpreting services.

  Collaborate with faculty, students, and community members to ensure best practices
  and cooperation among colleagues, providing professional and courteous assistance as
  requested.

  Coordinate services for KSU faculty and staff as well as events in the community;
  assume responsibility for invoicing, record keeping, and maintaining up to date
  budget records.

  Provide project and task support to the department, division and the university
  regarding accessibility services.
  Uphold and represent SAS/Kent State Interpreting Services Mission and Vision
  Statements.

  Provide monthly data analysis reports with current service hours and fiscal
  expenditures.

  Support SAS operations including, but not limited to participation in SAS staff
  meetings and service on SAS committees.

  Perform related duties as assigned.

REPORTS TO:

  Designated Supervisor or Lead Interpreter

  LEADERSHIP AND SUPERVISION:

  Supervises contract interpreters; supervises and mentors graduate assistant(s) and or
  provide guidance of support staff or student employees who work on a project or
  assignment on a temporary or intermittent basis throughout the year.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  Education and Experience:

  Bachelor’s degree in Interpreting or related field and two years American Sign
  Language interpreting experience. Candidate for National Certification.

                                            OR

  Associate’s degree and seven years American Sign Language interpreting experience.
  Candidate for National Certification.

  Preferences:
  Master’s degree in Interpreting or related field.
  Certificate by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

  Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

     Knowledge of personal computer applications

     Excellent spoken and written English skills in a variety of registers.

     Strong interpersonal skills.

     Ability to supervise.

     Working knowledge of post-secondary access issues and service provision.

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of
force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbent is required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus
occasionally.
