Subject: Update on Middle School Transformation Initiative
The Middle School Transformation initiative began the 2009-2010 with much enthusiasm and commitment on the part of administrators, teachers and parents. The new core curriculum in math, literacy and science was implemented in September in all of our middle schools. Grade 6 students were provided challenging standards-based curriculum including high quality instruction in both college prep and honors groups. Flexible classroom groupings have created an organizational structure that allows schools to address individual needs and strengths of all students. In addition, an advisory program was initiated to support the social emotional needs of the adolescent. The Efficacy Institute has continued to provide support and training to our 6th grade teachers, while introducing the 7th grade teachers to Efficacy, for implementation in 20102011. Following up on the work begun on our August Administrators Retreat, building and central office administrators are collaborating to provide support, training and professional development to staff. Monitoring the fidelity of curriculum implementation is part of the discussions at monthly principals meetings, school visitations, and district administrators meetings. Middle School Advisory Council (MSAC) began its second year with a meeting on Monday, October 5, 2009, where parents, teachers and administrators came together to provide input and support the Middle Transformation work. Feedback included the following comments from teachers, parents and administrators: • • • • • The first day of school was the smoothest opening that teachers or administrators could remember Teachers reported that kids appear more engaged and “turned on” Discipline issues have been reduced as reported by staff A parent reported that their child is happy in heterogeneous classes Building administrators reported positive parent feedback on open school night
Although the general feedback was positive, all agree that challenges exist which include class size, additional training on instructional differentiation, and challenging all kids at their levels. Updates will be provided as the year progresses. 1
