 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
10
11 TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF
12 TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF SOUTH
13 CAROLINA HIGHWAY 28 IN ABBEVILLE COUNTY FROM
14 THE MCCORMICK COUNTY LINE TO THE ANDERSON
15 COUNTY LINE THE “173D AIRBORNE BRIGADE (SEP) SKY
16 SOLDIERS MEMORIAL HIGHWAY VIETNAM 1965-1971”
17 AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG
18 THIS HIGHWAY THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS “173D
19 AIRBORNE BRIGADE (SEP) SKY SOLDIERS MEMORIAL
20 HIGHWAY VIETNAM 1965-1971”.
21
22 Whereas, the 173D Airborne Brigade (Separate) was activated on
23 the island of Okinawa, Japan on March 26, 1963; and
24
25 Whereas, the “Sky Soldier” as the Nationalist Chinese paratroopers
26 called the 173D, made thousands of parachute jumps in a dozen
27 countries. The brigade was the first United States Army ground
28   combat unit sent to the Republic of South Vietnam in May 1965;
29 and
30
31 Whereas, in combat operations in Vietnam, this group of brave
32 soldiers was the first brigade to travel into “War Zone D” to
33 destroy enemy base camps. The unit also fought battles in the iron
34 triangle, conducted the only major combat parachute jump in the
35 Tay Ninh area, and blocked North Vietnamese Army incursions
36 during the bloodiest fighting of the war at “Dak To” during the
37 summer and fall of 1967. In addition, elements of the brigade
38 conducted an amphibious assault against the North Vietnamese
39 Army and Viet Cong forces as part of an operation to clear the rice
40 growing lowlands along the “Bong Song” Littoral; and
41

     [4012] 1
1 Whereas, the troopers of the 173D Airborne Brigade (SEP) wear
2 their combat badges and decorations with pride. During more than
3 six years of nearly continuous combat in Vietnam, the brigade
4 earned fourteen campaign streamers and four unit citations; and
 5
6 Whereas, the brigade had thirteen Congressional Medal of Honor
7 recipients, over one hundred thirty Distinguished Service Cross
8 recipients, and over six thousand Purple Heart recipients. Before
9 the brigade was deactivated on January 14, 1972 at Fort Campbell,
10 Kentucky, sadly, it had lost over one thousand seven hundred
11 brave individuals during combat operations in Vietnam; and
12
13 Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the General Assembly to
14 permanently recognize the heroism and sacrifices in defense of our
15 freedom during the Vietnam War displayed by the individuals of
16 the 173D by naming a portion of South Carolina Highway 28 in
17 Abbeville County in their honor. Now, therefore,
18
19 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
20 concurring:
21
22 That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution,
23 request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of
24 South Carolina Highway 28 in Abbeville County from the
25 McCormick County line to the Anderson County line the “173D
26 Airborne Brigade (SEP) Sky Soldiers Memorial Highway Vietnam
27 1965-1971” and erect appropriate markers or signs along this
28 highway that contain the words:
29
30 “173D Airborne Brigade (SEP)
31 Sky Soldiers Memorial Highway
32 Vietnam 1965-1971”.
33
34 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
35 the Department of Transportation.
36 ----XX----
