the 2012 Ryder Cup has had everything. To
me there were two stand outs from this Ryder Cup; a Hollywood scripted comeback and an
emotional captain that clearly leads by example and has the love and support of all those
around him.

The Ryder Cup (officially the Ryder Cup Matches) is a biennial golf competition between
teams from Europe and the United States. The competition is jointly administered by the
PGA of America and the PGA European Tour, and is contested every two years, the venue
alternating between courses in the United States and Europe. The Ryder Cup is also the name
of the trophy, after the person who donated it, Samuel Ryder. (Wikipedia)

There are so many stories to come out of this Ryder Cup, The USA team dominating the first
two days only for the Europeans to play unbelievably well on the last day to come back and
win. Rory McIlroy arrived ten minutes before his start time but still won his game. Ian
Poulter winning the last two holes to snatch a victory from jaws of defeat. There were so
many wonderful anecdotes from this Ryder Cup it will truly be remembered as one of the

Why José María Olazábal Is A True Leader
However, through all the greatness of this spectacle the man of the moment for me has to be
the leader of the European team, Jose Maria Olazabal. He was Seve Ballesteros’s best friend
and how fitting that he should bring his team home in the way that he did. The players loved
him, they trusted him and they all believed in him. This victory is as much to do with his
great all round leadership as it was the golf that was actually played. He is a true leader of

The most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born – that there is a genetic factor
to leadership. This myth asserts that people simply either have certain charismatic qualities
or not. That’s nonsense; in fact, the opposite is true. Leaders are made rather than born.
Failing organizations are usually over-managed and under-led.

A True Leader

Leadership is an art and requires creativity.
There are certain essential principles and
techniques required to being a great leader.
A good leader knows when it is time to
change shape because they are highly
attentive to those around them. Coming from
a position of strength, a great leader takes
risks by freeing up the creative genius in
their followers to build their capability and
multiply the talents of the organization. This
will lead to community and greatness. By
powerfully communicating a vision that motivates, and inspires followers, a great leader is
able to transform his or her organization. A good leader needs to be able to laugh; a great
leader needs to be able to laugh at oneself.

Here are my five key traits of being a GREAT LEADER:

You must have a vision – As a leader, you have to learn to communicate your vision or the
vision of your company to the people you want to follow you.

You must have passion – As a leader you must demonstrate passion: When you talk about
your vision for the company or organisation, let your passion for your vision shine through.

You must learn to be a great decision maker – A leader needs to make key decisions that
can have a huge impact on your business.

You must be a team builder – To become a great leader, you must develop a great team.
Most leaders can’t do everything on their own and surround themselves with top people.

You must have character – without character, all the other criteria don’t matter. All great
leaders have taken steps to learn about their individual personality and what part it plays in
their leadership style.

José María Olazábal Is A True Leader

I think we can safely say that José María Olazábal had all these qualities. As the leader of the
pack he has delivered in so many more ways than what was expected of him. I would love to
have José María Olazábal as my leader.
