FREELANCE BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST
Art Gene is a ground-breaking, artist led, arts organisation with a history of delivering real
inspirational projects in the heart of communities, on a local, National and International
level. The company is an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation ( NPO), and a Charity.
Art Gene is looking for the right person to join our team as a Freelance Business
Development Specialist. This exciting new role is intended to strengthen and consolidate
the financial and business base of the company. It will enable Art Gene to deliver the
quantity and quality of project work currently in development, and will initiate and develop
opportunities for the organisation to further its aims through earned income and public
and private investment.
Art Gene has a considerable number of capital and project initiatives in development around
the North West for delivery over the next five years.
The Re-visioning Utopia strand includes a range of ecological coastal capital projects
creating: hides, viewing structures, and visitor facilities, projects for live-work premises,
housing, and community spaces which celebrate and build on our cultural, natural and
The associated process towards these Capital works includes a range of multi-disciplinary
research projects, exhibitions, seminars, and events focused around interpretation and the
mapping of existing ‘assets’ which are designed to engage communities in the development
of the final works.
Art Gene has a wide and evolving portfolio of project partners, ranging from National Nature
Reserves to Local Government, Business to Communities, locally and regionally.
All projects require an individual who can advocate persuasively, and communicate a deep
understanding of our work to effectively develop their income generating and legacy
potential for the company.
Business Development Specialist
Contractual Requirements: 1 Year Freelance Contract (renewable)
Purpose and Key Objectives
Art Gene requires an experienced individual to join the company in a freelance capacity to
work with the two Artist Founder Directors. We are looking for a person who can contribute
to and extend our skills base around the companies research remit, the social natural and
The principal objective of the role is to lead on the current and future, development and
delivery of agreed business initiatives and investment activity. The purpose is to contribute
to the future creative sustainability and business resilience of the company.
The role is based at Art Gene in Barrow-in-Furness, with some home working and the ability
to travel to meetings around the Northwest. It is based on a 4-day-per-week equivalent

Key Tasks and responsibilities
Responsible to the Artist Founder Directors
To Lead on Fundraising and Business Development including:
Develop a wider understanding of the vision, aims, projects, and upcoming
developments, to advocate and promote Art Gene at a high level, alongside the
Artist Founder Directors.
Negotiate and secure new and potential investment sources.
Develop relationships with potential new and existing funders and business partners
including: Arts Council, Trusts & Foundations, patrons and corporate donors,
alongside the Artist Founder Directors.
Develop strategic investment plans and secure appropriate resources, in support of
the ethos of the company, bringing in funds for: core activities, future freelance and
core staffing, programme, project and capital works.
In consultation with the Artist Founder Directors, Board of Trustees and other staff,
write and review business plans, polices and investment plans.
Work with the Artist Founders, freelance consultants, artists, architects, ecologists,
other specialists, and non-arts partners to develop an in depth understanding of
projects that will lead to securing strategic investment.
Working with the Artist Founders, associates and part time Financial Manager,
produce all monitoring, reporting and business planning and development
documents and information requested by funders including Arts Council, Charities
Commission, and ensure all deadlines are met.
Work with the Artist Founder Directors and Financial Manager, to ensure all polices,
procedures, contracting and legal requirements are met by the company.
Compile and present funding and business development progress reports at
quarterly Board meetings.
The Role is:
Responsible to the Artist Founder Directors.
Supported by the companies part-time Financial Manager/Company Secretary.
