Modern America:
o Watergate Scandal- President Nixon is involved in a cover-up of illegal activities (the

   breaking of Democratic Party offices in the Watergate Building) sponsored by his re-

   election campaign- Nixon will be the first President to resign in order to prevent a

   justifiable impeachment-

o Immigration Act 1965- equalizes the immigration rate, no preference for Europeans

o Civil Rights Movement- African Americans protest discriminatory laws in the South, and

   push for Federal government help in achieving equality of treatment

o Little Rock Central High School- Desegregated by Brown v. Board of education during

   Eisenhower administration

o Birmingham Demonstrations- MLK protest marches are attacked by police dogs and fire hoses

o American Indian Movement- American Indians will protest in the 1960s - were

   influenced by African American Civil Rights Protests

o Martin Luther King Jr. – African American Civil Rights Leader, Famous speech “I have

   a dream.” Assassinated by James Earl Ray, 1968

o MLK used Non-violent resistance or Civil Disobedience, protests, marches, boycotts to

   change discriminatory laws.

o Dredd Scott v. Sanford Case- said all slavery was legal in all states- becomes a reason

   for Civil War- Northerners will vote Republican, Abe Lincoln

o Plessy v. Ferguson- 1896, said segregation was legal if it was equal “separate but equal”

o Brown v. Board- 1954 said that Separate but equal is never equal” overturned Plessy v.

   Ferguson
o President FD Roosevelt- President elected during the Great Depression, World War II

   and used increased Presidential power during The Great Depression, World War II, and

   late Truman, during the Cold War.

o Mexicans immigrate beginning in the 1930’s many to California to work in Agriculture



o Domestic politics impacts American foreign policy- Vietnam War was unpopular and

   many people protested and the government changed policy



o Cold War- is the conflict between United States and Russian communists = Soviet Union-

   to control other countries, Cold War is cold because there is no shooting, fought with

o McCarthyism- searched for Communists in the American Government

o Alger Hiss was an American accused of being a communist

o The Truman Doctrine- President Truman’s plan to prevent the spread of Communism

   after World War II

o The Berlin Blockade- Russians try to push Allies out of the city of Berlin and the

   Americans fly in supplies for 40 days

o Korean War- After WWII Korea is split in two- North is Communist, South is Capitalist,

   North invades the South- US comes to the South’s Aide- United Nations approves of

   defense of South Korea- Chinese come into the war after- General MacArthur attacks

   through Inchon Invasion- war ends in stalemate

o The Bay of Pigs Invasion- After Cuban Revolution in 1958, Fidel Castro takes over

   Cuba, Anti-Castro forces (sponsored by the CIA) invade at the Bay of Pigs and are

   defeated by Castro forces because Kennedy, refused to authorize air strikes from US

   planes.
o The Atomic Bomb was invented and tested in the Deserts of New Mexico

o Mutual Assured Destruction- idea associated with the building of Atomic weapons- both

   the US and the Soviet Union had enough weapons to destroy each other- both wanted to

   prevent Nuclear War

o The Vietnam War- 50,000 Americans are killed trying to prevent Communist North

   Vietnam from taking over Pro-American South Vietnam- causes problems for President

   Johnson, President Nixon makes a peace plan based on massive bombing of the North, the

   North agrees to peace but only until the American Army leaves South Vietnam, then the

   North will take over.

o Latin America and the Cold War- American government will support any non-

   communist government in Latin America- US will support many governments that are

   dictatorships and not good to their people.

o The United Nations- an international organization dedicated to solving world problems

   and preventing war- was created after WWII

o NATO- North Atlantic Treaty Organization- American Military Alliance with

   European countries- against Communist governments, mostly USSR (Soviet Union)

o SEATO- South East Asia Treaty Organization- American Military Alliance with Asian

   countries- against Communist governments, mostly China

o Marshal Plan- After WWII the Americans support European governments with economic

   aid in order prevent Communist takeover

o Hiroshima and Nagasaki- Americans drop two atomic bombs in order to force Japan to

   surrender World War II.

o Japanese Americans- are interned (arrested and put in camps) during World War II, they

   are removed from California and the West Coast

       o American manufacturing that produced war goods- tanks, planes, guns, uniforms,
         equipment-
       o This is the biggest advantage the US had- Makes the difference in the War

Island Hopping-
       o American strategy of choosing specific islands to attack- in the Pacific, while
          choosing not to attack others-
       o purpose was to only fight for important strategic Islands-
       o The goal was to have bases from which to launch bombers to attack Japan.
