East Los Angeles College
Fall 2012
Instructor: William J. Poehner, Ph.D.

Welcome to Human Anatomy!
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a 4-unit course including 3 hours lecture and 3 hours laboratory per
semester week. All major systems of human anatomy are covered using the cat cadaver, several sheep
organs and human models for study. This class is intended and designed for the health care major,
stressing medical terminology as used in all health care professions.
BOOKS AND SUPPLIES:
Required Textbooks:
Human Anatomy by Marieb, Wilhelm and Mallatt, 6th Edition
Anatomy 001 Laboratory Manual (Dept. of Life Science, East Los Angeles College)
Dissection Specimen: (Preserved Cat)—Purchase through bookstore. Cat purchase receipts must be given
to instructor on day of cat distribution. Maximum of four students per cat.
Dissection Instruments (Kit) and gloves. The dissection instruments can be purchased separately (scalpel,
scissors, forceps and probes) or as a kit. Gloves can be purchased from the stockroom at 25 cents a pair or
you may purchase a box of 100 gloves from a commercial supplier. You will use about 20-30 pairs of gloves
throughout the semester.
Eye protection
Lab Coat or Apron
Scantron Test Sheets (3) Form 882-E (100 answers), 884-E (200 answers)
STUDENT RESOURCES
STUDENT SUPPORT: I want each one of you to succeed in this course. Please take advantage of as many
resources as you can to do so! You may contact me by email any day of the week. If necessary,
arrangement may be made to meet with me before class. Please let me know in advance by email.
Campus Learning Assistance Center: For additional exposure to a variety of anatomical models visit the
Campus Learning Assistance Center located in building E-7, 2nd floor (the newest building on campus!). The
anatomy models include bone boxes and models of different systems. This floor also has a computer lab.
Check it out!
Tutorial service is also available at the Learning Assistance Center. Students have benefitted a lot from
tutors. Get an early start!
Phone: (323) 265-8762.
Online resources: Pay special attention to the links that I have on my web page. These are especially
helpful for learning organs and structures for the laboratory component of the course.
I will post lecture and laboratory powerpoints on the ACE Portal system. The first set of lectures are
currently available on the Portal.

therefore, the letter following the “w” in my email address is “j” (although it looks like an “i”).

ATTENDANCE: Regular class attendance is expected. After missing eight hours of class (lecture or
laboratory), exclusion is possible by school policy. Three tardies equal one absence. I take roll in the first 10
minutes of lab/lecture and at the end of lab. Students may be excluded after the first 30 minutes of the first
lecture. If you miss more than the hours your allowed to miss according to campus policy I may drop you.
However, sometimes I won’t. It is ultimately the student’s responsibility to drop a course if s/he stops
attending class.
CHEATING POLICY: Cell phones and pagers must be off during class. Looking at another’s exam, allowing
another student to look at your exam or quiz, or talking, possession of cheat notes or sheets, electronic
dictionaries or devices, or any other dishonest activity during an exam or quiz will result in a zero on that
assignment and/or expulsion for one to two class meetings.
EVALUATION/GRADING:
1. Exams: There will be 3 midterm exams, 100 points each. Generally, I strongly discourage make up
tests. However, should you miss an exam due to a real emergency or illness I may allow a make up
exam. To make up an exam missed due to illness you must show a doctor’s note. If you know in
advance that you will miss an exam for any other reason, you must discuss the situation with me
either in person or by email.
2. Final exam: The final exam is mandatory and comprehensive (200 points). Approximately 50% of
the final exam will cover “old” material while the remaining 50% will test you on material covered in
the last three lectures.
3. Laboratory Exams: Three main lab exams that consist of identifying lab specimens in a time
setting. The first two lab exams will consist of approximately 50 questions totaling 100 points each.
The third lab exam will have approximately 75 questions and will be worth 150 points. No lab exams
may be dropped. No lab exams may be made up. A fourth practicum on histology, worth 50 points
and consisting of identifying tissues and/or structures in the tissues, will be given in lecture on a date
to be determined.
4. Laboratory Quizzes: These will cover the assigned lab chapters of the previous lab; each is worth
10 points. These quizzes are given in the first ten minutes of class. There will be no make-up
quizzes. Your two lowest quiz scores will be dropped.
5. Homework Assignments and Study Groups: Assignments covering the lecture material are due
on the exam days. Each is worth 25 points. These assignments are extensive and are intended to
provide you with an opportunity to become familiar with material that I will test you on. Approximately
70% of lecture exam material will be drawn from these questions. I encourage you to form study
groups with other members of the class to work on these assignments, unless instructions are given
to the contrary.
6. Lecture quizzes: About ten quizzes worth from ten to twenty points each will be given throughout
the semester during lecture. These quizzes are given during the first ten minutes of lecture. The
quizzes may not be made up.
7. Extra Credit: Extra credit is earned on the exams only (both lecture and lab). You may earn up to
10% extra credit on each exam by answering special extra credit questions or by answering
additional questions.
8. Lecture Notes/Outlines: I will provide you with lecture notes for the first lecture. Otherwise, please
avail yourself of the lecture notes I have posted on my web page. As mentioned above, lecture
powerpoints are available on the ACE Portal system.
9. Take home tests: There is not enough time to cover the chapter on cytology. This material will be
covered by a take home test, worth 40 points (See lecture schedule).
2
10. Points and Grading Scale—the following scale will be used to determine your final grade:
A = 90 to 100% 3 Lecture exams X 100 points = 300
B = 80 to 89% 2 Laboratory exams X 100 points = 200
1 Laboratory exam worth 150 points 150
C = 70 to 79% 10 Lab quizzes X 10 points = 100
D = 60 to 69% 1 Final Lecture exam X 200 points = 200
F = 0 to 59% 4 Assignments X 25 points = 100
1 histology practicum = 50
10 Lecture quizzes 100
1 Human Muscle test 50
1 take home test 40
Total points = 1290
