The Word on the Street returns with a new and exciting
line-up including The Word in the Alley
KITCHENER – If you love the written word, you’ll love The Word On The Street literary festival, which
transforms Civic Square into a booklover’s paradise on Sunday, Sept. 23 at our new location – in and around
Kitchener City Hall.
A stellar line-up for the 2012 festival includes an appearance by Jian Ghomeshi, host of CBC Radio One’s
popular national arts magazine show, Q.
New this year is Word in the Alley, in Hall’s Lane between Gaukel and Ontario streets, a mini-festival running
from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This edgy addition features spoken word poetry, readings by indie authors and a ‘zine
publishing panel. The Alley Stage will also feature a peek into the Made in Kitchener digital storytelling walking
tour, created by local media artist Dwight Storring, Latitudes Storytelling Festival and the City of Kitchener’s
arts and culture division. Richard Zajac, a DC comic artist will also take the stage, and Pat the Dog Playwright
Centre will host a discussion with local playwright, Heather Majaury. Other all-day activities include the make-
a-‘zine tent and a comic strip workshop.
At The Word on the Street, the children’s tent is packed with author readings. Kids can get creative with crafts
and sing their heart out with Erick Traplin. Forty-plus exhibitors will be on hand: independent publishers,
writers, booksellers, and moreFrom independent authors to book publishers and bookstores, Literacy on the
Square marketplace has something for everyone.
Other authors confirmed to appear include local writer, Erin Bow; Taylor Jones of DearPhotograph.com and
Don Harron, who presents the story of his 77-year stint in the entertainment business in his memoir, My
The Word on the Street is celebrated in six cities across Canada on the same day: Vancouver, Lethbridge,
