CHROME Awards See Suffolk Public Schools News Release January 6, 2009
Congratulations to John Yeates Middle School, and Mack Benn Jr. Elementary School who were
big winners at the recent CHROME 25th Anniversary Celebration held at the Virginia Air and Space
Center in Hampton. The CHROME (Cooperating Hampton Roads Organizations for Minorities in
Engineering) awards were given for the Outstanding Middle School Club Award, and Outstanding
Elementary School Club Award. There is only one award given, in each category, for the thirteen
localities of South Hampton Roads and the Peninsula. These awards are presented to the school clubs that
introduce young people having a dream to exciting opportunities in math, science, engineering and
technology. This club compliments classroom learning by providing exciting demonstrations and
laboratory experiments, college and career presentations and other age-appropriate activities. The
CHROME sponsors and co-sponsors from John Yeates Middle School are Louis Garland, Liston Jackson,
and Kim Williams. The CHROME sponsors and co-sponsors from Mack Benn Jr. Elementary School are
Margaret Dugger, Candice Spencer, Alicia Thomas, Donna Bailey, and Melley Roundtree. There are
hundreds of CHROME students enrolled in the fourteen participating Suffolk Public Schools with many
club sponsors spending many hours during and after school to coordinate and facilitate the extended
lessons for the science, technology, engineering and math program.
The second set of awards also went to Suffolk Public Schools CHROME sponsors Louis Garland of
John Yeates Middle School and Margaret Dugger of Mack Benn Jr. Elementary School. These awards
were given for the Outstanding Middle School Sponsor of the Year, and Outstanding Elementary
School Sponsor of the Year. These awards honor a club sponsor who has exhibited exceptional service
and dedication. The individuals have demonstrated a commitment to CHROME activities on both the
club and regional levels, providing mentorship for young people who have the goal of living the dream.
