SUBJECT 1 30 points

a. Read the following text and sum it up in 50 words. 10 points

Countless teachers throughout my high school career have said, “Knowledge is power.” While
I do believe that having a familiarity with numerous subjects is both helpful and essential to leading
an informed existence, I question the validity of some of the supposed “knowledge” available to the
public.
One website, in particular, causes need for concern. Wikipedia, the largest and most
comprehensive free online encyclopedia, though quite useful in writing last minute essays on the
French Revolution, is not always the most reliable website.
In an attempt to seem accessible to everyone, from middle school students to bingo playing
senior citizens, Wikipedia has compromised on accuracy. When anyone has the opportunity to edit
an entry, a dangerous door opens. The New Yorker reports that only six hours after Hezbollah
terrorists kidnapped two Israeli soldiers, a Wikipedia entry appeared detailing the ordeal. Since
then, the Israel-Lebanon Conflict article has been edited more than 4,000 times.
It is up to the Wikipedia consumer to verify the “facts” in each entry. A recommendation that
many Wikipedia loyalists suggest is to reference the topic of interest using the citations at the end
of each Wikipedia article. However helpful such a suggestion may be, the reality is that teenagers
are often not motivated to spend hours of their day researching the Fall of the Roman Empire. To
them, Wikipedia provides an all-encompassing article on the subject and makes the notion of using
the library as a resource archaic.
Obviously, there is no turning back time. Wikipedia is a respected source that is here to stay
and it provides a much-needed lesson for my generation. Wikipedia teaches us to question, just as
those 3,999 editors of the Israel-Lebanon Conflict entry questioned the author before them. It even
dares us to differ, giving us the opportunity to voice those differences.
We can challenge and we can question. In fact, it is my hope that my peers do just that. Not
only does it force us to think, but it makes us more well-rounded people, the kind of people my
teachers are trying to mold with their “Knowledge is Power” motto.
(Yaffa Shira Fredrick, Wikipedia teaches us to question, Young People’s Press)

b. Think of a three-step plan to make Wikipedia a reliable source of information. Describe the
