Program Eligibility

 To be eligible for support from NSERC, both the proposed program of study and proposed
research must be in one of the fields that NSERC supports. The research must be part of an
overall research program which lies in a field that NSERC supports, and the proposed research
must be supervised by a faculty member whose own research program lies in a field that
       NSERC supports.

 NSERC does not support clinically-oriented research or programs of study (e.g., clinical
psychology or clinical neuropsychology). Joint graduate programs which include a professional
degree are not eligible for support from NSERC. NSERC has discontinued support for joint
programs with an MD component (e.g., MD/Ph.D.)

 The research challenge must lie within the natural sciences and engineering (NSE). Proposals
that include the use of methodologies, tools, techniques and knowledge from the NSE are not
automatically considered eligible by NSERC. In cases where the proposed research is deemed
to fall within the mandate of either CIHR or SSHRC, NSERC will not accept the application.

end of this current fall term are not eligible to apply for a PGS M

 Doctoral students who have completed more than 24 months of a stand-alone doctoral degree
program by the end of this current fall term are not eligible to apply for a PGS D

 Direct-Entry Doctoral students who have completed more than 36 months by the end of this
current fall term are not eligible to apply for a PGS D.

    Special Notes:

o All previous studies counted towards the graduate degree for which funding is
requested will be included in the evaluation of eligibility

o Two months of part-time study equal one month of full-time study

o For students who have transferred from a master’s to doctoral program, the months in
the doctoral program will be counted from the transfer date to the doctoral program.
