IMPORTANT INFORMATION –
Please read the information below carefully. You are also strongly advised to see the Frequently Asked
Questions page for Erasmus students on our website:
LEAP English language courses are only open to Erasmus / Visiting (non-native speakers) students.
They are also not open to members of the public or undergraduate/postgraduate students. You must
have credits available to apply for a course as otherwise you will be asked to pay a fee.
Applicants must have the IELTS proficiency level stated in the 'pre-requisites' section of the course
description, for example if you wish to apply for English for Academic Purposes, part 1, the level required
is 6.5. Course descriptions are available from.
Note that you may not be allowed to join a course for which your current level of English is too high, for
instance if your level is IELTS 7.0 or above you will not be able to join a level 6.0 course.
To find out more about IELTS, see http://www.ielts.org/default.aspx. Roughly speaking, IELTS 6.0 is
equivalent to the Cambridge First Certificate in English, which in turn is approximately equivalent to level
2 in the Common European Framework, CEF (see http://tinyurl.com/netux6 as well as the table below);
IELTS 6.5 to the Certificate in Advanced English (C1 in the CEF), and IELTS 7.0 to the Certificate of
Proficiency in English (C1 or C2, depending on grade, in the CEF).
You must state in the form whether you have the language proficiency required and will be able to
provide proof. See further down what you need to do if you cannot provide the evidence requested.
WHAT CAN I USE AS PROOF?
By far the simplest way is to ask your personal tutor at your home university to provide the LEAP office
with a statement of your current level by letter / email. This must clearly indicate level as per table
Alternatively, you may submit a photocopy of any certificate you possess (no originals, please) (you may
scan the certificate and email it to us, provided we can easily correlate it to IELTS, CEF or any Cambridge
qualification. This should be a recent qualification – no older than December 2009. This must
accompany your enrolment form.
WHAT IF I CAN NOT PROVE MY PROFICIENCY LEVEL
If you think you have the level required, but cannot provide proof, you must sit the proficiency test run
by the Language Centre on Wednesday 22nd September (venue to be announced).
The results of this test will be available on 23rd September outside room SG14 in the Samuel Alexander
building (no. 67 on Campus Map), after 14:00.
The table below indicates the approximate equivalences of levels for the CEF, IELTS, the Cambridge tests
and the University of Manchester English language test.
