SUMMER 2012 NEWSLETTER
As we complete this academic year, I would like to thank you all for your valued support and involvement
in the school life of St Hugh’s throughout 2011-2012. We have plenty of news to share.
We say goodbye and good luck to Mrs Cowan who has worked throughout the school for a number of years.
We wish her every success in the future.
A special thank you must go to Mrs Paterson and the entire PTA who have once again raised a large sum of
money for the school this year. Sports Day and the end of year production raised enough money to take the
year’s total to close on £3000. Well done and thank you to all who contributed to such success.

Links with community schools affected by adverse weather
Unfortunately the weather affected a number of exciting events.
The 2nd Birchwood Community Schools Day had to be postponed which was a shame as the school was
prepared to showcase their ‘Big Dance’ and represent Nigeria in the Olympic themed event.
The Catholic schools sports day was also cancelled due to rain. Thanks to Miss McPhail from SSPP for
helping to organise the day. Both these events are hopefully going to be re-scheduled for next academic
Finally, the outdoor Athletics track and field events for years 3-6 were called off due to rain.
This year has once again been a really successful one. I am extremely grateful for all the support parents and
family have given the school at all the events we have entered.
Many congratulations to the netballers who finished the year as runners up in the County Championships.
This follows two years of being County Champions. The team finished the year a creditable 3rd in the
The football team were runners up in Division 1 and reached the final of the Domino Pizza 6 a side
competition losing on shots on target. The B team finished the season with 10-3 and 7-1 victories. Well done
to both the teams.
The Year 6 Girl cricket team reached the final of County Championships and despite not winning overall
played very well.
A number of Year 6 pupils and the Samba drummers took part in an exciting Go-Kart competition at the
Yarborough Leisure Centre. The drummers opened and closed the event and St Hugh’s made two go karts to
compete in a multi event competition. Thanks to Mr Jeff Crain for his expertise designing the go karts that
were painted to represent Nigeria and Sweden.
The school cricketers and netballers were privileged to receive tickets for the Olympic torch ceremony held
at Yarborough Leisure Centre.
Sports day was a resounding success. Thank you to parents for supporting the event (we were lucky with the
weather!) Every child received an Olympic 2012 St Hugh’s medal as a special memento.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank parents who have helped in classes and also to the students
who have worked with us this year and wish them every success in the future.
Music and Drama Achievements
Years 5 and 6 performed ‘Bugsy Malone’ to a packed audience over two nights. The children’s acting and
singing was once again of a very high standard. Well done to Miss Blood, Miss Noor,
Mrs Cook, Miss Dembovskis and Mrs O’Reilly for music and choreography. A special thank you to Mrs
Heathershaw, Miss Heathershaw and Miss Darby for the artwork.
Last weekend the drummers recently performed to a captive audience at the Boultham Park Fair.
On Monday night we held a ‘St Hugh’s Has Got Talent’ night. 30 acts thoroughly entertained the full house
for two and a half hours! Well done to all the children who played instruments, sang, danced and told jokes.
It was a truly memorable evening and the hall was full to capacity
Finally we celebrated Year 6’s time at St Hugh’s with Mass, followed by a certificate presentation and
disco. Thanks to Father John for celebrating Mass. The PTA once again provided the food and disco.
All years have enjoyed summer outings to celebrate the end of the academic year. Year 5 pupils were
especially privileged, as they were given the opportunity to go on a four-day residential trip to Ampleforth
in North Yorkshire. This was a wonderful experience for them, which they thoroughly enjoyed and their
behaviour was excellent.
Many thanks to all the parent helpers who assisted with the class outings to ensure they were a success.
I would like to wish you all a happy and safe holiday on behalf of Father John Kyne, the Governors and all
the staff. Good luck to all the Year 6 pupils and those pupils who will be leaving us at the end of term. We
hope you take with you happy memories of the time spent at St Hugh’s and we wish you well for the future.
We all look forward to seeing the children fit, healthy and raring to go for the new academic year on
Wednesday 5th September 2012.
