Making the Internet Work For You is your guide to the basics, from domains to Web sites, e-commerce to marketing and much more. Enjoy! Bob Parsons page ii DOMAIN NAME BASICS You might know a domain name simply as the Web address or “.COM. When ” someone types a domain name into a Web browser, the requested Web page opens. For example, the domain name www.yourpersonaldomainname.com locates an Internet address for “yourpersonaldomainname.com. ” Go Daddy Fun Fact The Go Daddy Group serves over 3 million customers with over 10 million domain names under management. What is a registrar? A domain name registrar is the person or company that lets you search for an available domain name and register that name for use on the Internet. TOP-LEVEL DOMAINS A Top-Level Domain (TLD) is the part of the domain name located to the right of the dot (“.”). The most common TLD in use today is .COM, closely followed by .NET and .ORG. There are several other popular top-level domains, including .BIZ, .INFO, .NAME and .WS. Top-level domains have certain guidelines attached, but are generally available to any registrant, anywhere in the world. Exceptions are restricted TLDs (rTLDs)— which include .BIZ and .NAME—that require the registrant to represent a certain type of entity, or to belong to a certain community. For example, the .NAME TLD is available strictly to individuals. A top-level domain can also be of geographic significance and only available to registrants in the locale defined by the TLD. These are called country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) and include such top-level domains as .US (United States), .EU (Europe), .TV (Tuvalu), .CC (Cocos Islands), .DE (Germany), .JP (Japan), .BE (Belgium), .UK (United Kingdom) and .NZ (New Zealand). Tip: If the .COM you want to register is already taken, you can check to see if it’s available with an alternate TLD. You may also want to consider registering all or some of the more common TLDs of the same domain name in order to protect your brand, your site or yourself from someone else with your brand or name in mind. To find out which TLDs we currently offer, or for more information on registering domain names, please visit our Web site at www.godaddy.com. This simply is not true. Every day, thousands of sensible, informed buyers—individuals, families, businesses small and large and speculators—come to Go Daddy for low prices and premium value. In fact, a new domain name is registered with Go Daddy every 4.3 seconds. Go Daddy recently passed Network Solutions in total domain names under management, making us the #1 ICANN-accredited registrar in the world for .COM, .NET, .ORG, .INFO, .BIZ and .US domain names. So how did we make it to #1? We were able to achieve this exciting milestone thanks to the help of our loyal, smart customers. Our reputation for industry-best service and value has kept them coming back for more and led them to refer us to their friends, family members and business associates. Go Daddy customers register their domains for prices up to 70% less than the competition, and receive FREE with every domain purchase: Quick Blog Hosting with Web site Complete Email ($9.99 value) Valuable domain essentials, such as a Starter Page, domain forwarding and masking, DNS control and domain locking Comprehensive management tools Stable, secure, world-class data center Expert, “best-in-industry” live customer service and support, 24/7 State-of-the-art, “best-of-breed” systems And much more Editorial Comments & Reviews “A domain is a domain is a domain. They’re the same no matter where you get them. Different registrars may offer different bells and whistles, but the process of registering domains has very few variables. The biggest difference among them? Price. Network Solutions charges you $35 a year. Shop elsewhere, and you pay anywhere from $8 and up for exactly the same domain services. – Matt Lake, CNET Editor TO REGISTER A DOMAIN NAME Simply follow these five easy steps: Step 1: Check Domain Name Availability—See if the name you want is taken, and what your options are if it is. Step 2: Select Length of Your Registration—Register your domain from one year up to 10. Step 3: Create Your Contact Information—Important when the time comes to renew your domain name. Step 4: Select From Hosting Options—To put your domain name on the Internet, you first need a host. Step 5: Confirm Your Registration Details Email Us: support@godaddy.com 24/7 Domain Help: 480-505-8899 www.GoDaddy.com 24/7 Tech Support: 480-505-8877 page 2 Chapter 1 - Domain Name Basics Once you complete registration, how you use your new domain name is up to you. Here are a few of the most common options: Get a personalized email address. An email account can be a great way to put your domain to use, and gives you a personalized address that friends, family and business contacts will easily remember and associate directly with you. Put your Web site on the Internet. If your site design is complete, you will need to acquire a hosting account to upload your site on the Internet. If you have not built your Web site, there are several easy and affordable options for you to quickly put together a professional, quality site (see Chapter 2—Building a Web Site). Launch your own blog. Establish your online presence without a traditional Web by creating your own blog. All Go Daddy domain names come with free, easy-to use blogging tools to let you take advantage of this popular format, without additional software or experience. Forward domain names that are similar to your primary domain name. The more domain names you register, the better. You’ll prevent others from registering a similar domain name to yours. What to do with all these names? Forward them to your main domain name! Sell a domain name for a profit. Domain names can be a great investment. Visit Domain Name Aftermarket™ (www.tdnam.com) when the time comes to buy, sell or find a previously registered domain name. Wait. Maybe you haven’t decided what to do with your new domain name. There’s no rush. You can leave it parked with Go Daddy for the length of your registration. Go Daddy Fun Fact A new domain name is registered with The Go Daddy Group an average of every 4.3 seconds. Customers say... I just changed ALL of my domains from a competitor to Go Daddy and it was HASSLE-FREE, PAINLESS, FAST and best of all I’m saving a TON OF MONEY! – Dena W. TO TRANSFER A DOMAIN NAME You may transfer your domain name from your current registrar to Go Daddy at any time (within the restrictions set by ICANN® and your current registrar). Note: ICANN regulations prohibit transferring a domain name that has been registered or transferred within the last 60 days. Go Daddy offers a fast, automated, risk-free domain transfer thanks to an innovative Rapid Transfer System™ that spares you steps and saves you time (transfers are often completed in five days or less, but may take up to seven days to complete). Best of all, any time remaining on your existing registration transfers with your domain, plus you receive a FREE one-year extension. Call a Transfer Concierge anytime! 1-480-505-8866 Domain name transfers may only be initiated once acceptance of the transfer agreement is recorded, payment is made, and the administrative contact has responded positively giving permission to transfer the domain name. Your transfer is risk-free. If it fails to go through for any reason at all, Go Daddy will refund your fee, no questions asked. Follow these easy steps to ensure a smooth and timely transfer: Step 1: Purchase a transfer from our Web site by visiting www.godaddy.com. Step 2: Advise the administrative contact of your domain that the name is being transferred. Go Daddy will email your administrative contact by the next business day to request transfer approval. Step 3: When this acceptance is received, Go Daddy will send a transfer request to the Registry and then the Registry will email your current registrar. Step 4: Most likely, your current registrar will send your administrative contact an email asking for your approval of the transfer to Go Daddy. Please respond as directed. Step 5: Your current registrar will send an acceptance or rejection notice to the Registry and the Registry will email Go Daddy a notice of the acceptance or rejection. Step 6: Go Daddy will send you an email informing you that the transfer is complete or has failed. After Go Daddy has notified you that the transfer is complete, log in to your account at www.godaddy.com and verify the contact information for your domain. Note: You are responsible for updating the administrative contact’s email identified in the previous registrar’s WhoIs database. Tip: Some registrars lock domain names to prevent unauthorized transfers. Your domain name must be unlocked before the transfer can be completed. You can usually unlock your domain name by logging into your account at your current registrar, or by contacting their Customer Service department. Your personal information is exposed 24 hours a day, everyday, to anyone, anywhere. You have the power to change this. With a Go Daddy private (“unlisted”) registration, registering a domain name doesn’t mean sacrificing your privacy. Your new or existing domain is registered in the name of Domains By Proxy® (a Go Daddy affiliate company)—so their information is made public—not yours. Your information stays private, but you retain full benefits of domain registration. You can cancel, sell, renew or transfer your domain; set-up name servers for your domain; and resolve disputes involving your domain. In a sense, you rent space on a computer to hold your Web site. Your host, the computer where your Web site files are stored, assigns an address (DNS) for your files to your domain name so that anyone can find your Web site on the Internet by typing in your domain name. Go Daddy is an excellent choice for Web hosting, providing customers with world-class hosting and servers. Unlike many of its competitors, Go Daddy owns, operates and supports the hosting plans and servers it provides, down to the very last cable and disk. With Go Daddy, you’ll get fast, dependable hosting and servers, 24/7 live customer support and unbeatable prices. While our hosting plans are ideal for most individuals and small businesses, our dedicated servers and virtual dedicated servers are perfect for hosting multiple traffic-intensive Web sites on one server, running enterprise or gaming applications, or operating development environments. In order to choose the right hosting or server plan, you’ll need to consider a few things: How was your Web site designed? How much traffic or how many visitors do you expect monthly? How large is your site? What Web applications will you need? How many sites do you plan to host? Visit www.godaddy.com to see which Go Daddy Hosting or Server Plan works best for you. Remember that not every user—not even the majority of users—have the fastest computer on the market with a 19- or 21-inch monitor. When designing your Web site, accommodate an 800x600-pixel view and an average processor speed. In other words, don’t use a lot of large, high-resolution graphics on a page that defaults to a 1600x1200-pixel view. Ideally, your visitors should be able to see the whole page, or at least the majority of the page, without having to scroll. In addition, you don’t want your visitors waiting five minutes for your graphics to load before they can view the page. Try to keep your use of graphics or images to a minimum and optimize file sizes as much as possible. Include images only where they support the content of your page. Also, try not to include too many images on a single page. If your pages take too long to load, it will discourage your visitors and they may move on to a different Web site. Use colors and fonts sparingly. Less is more with Web design. Stick with one Email Us: support@godaddy.com 24/7 Domain Help: 480-505-8899 www.GoDaddy.com Chapter 2 - Building a Web Site or two colors, three at the most, when designing your Web site. And remember that it is easier on the eyes to read dark text on a light background than light text on a dark background. Ideally, it is best to have black text on a white background; the more contrast the better. It is also important to know that Sans Serif fonts are easier to read on a computer screen than Serif fonts are. (Serif fonts are typefaces that have “tails” on the letters, like Times New Roman or Courier. Sans Serif fonts are typefaces that do not have “tails” like Arial or Verdana.) On a computer screen, Serif fonts usually appear blurry, especially in smaller font sizes. Choose one Sans Serif font type and stick with it throughout your site. Organization and navigation. Arrange your pages and links in a logical flow so your visitors can make their way around your site without getting lost or having to search for additional information. Navigational menus help visitors jump quickly from page to page or find their way back to a page they previously viewed. One important rule: Don’t move the location of your navigation on each page, forcing the visitor to look for it. Give your visitors relevant content. Visitors come to your site looking for content they believe they will find on your site. If your domain name has the word “cats” in it and your content is all about kitchen appliances, your visitors will not return. Try to ensure that each page of your site has a specific point or main idea, and then stick to that point. If you have additional content that is related, link to that content as a related page. Keep your page content short and to the point. Go Daddy Fun Fact Go Daddy is the world’s #1 ICANN-accredited domain registrar for .COM, .NET, .ORG, .INFO, .BIZ and .US domains. SUCCESS STORY As an interior designer in Dallas, Dona Rosene knew she had to have something that would make her business stand out from the crowd. While her creative rooms, full of color and detail, definitely showcased the talent of her full-service studio, Dona knew that many clients, when hearing about her for the first time, would be looking for something that would provide an overview of her services and her success. And so, www.DonaRoseneInteriors.com was born. Her full-fledged Web site, registered through Go Daddy and utilizing the company’s hosting and deluxe email accounts, has not only her contact information and accreditation, but also provides photos of rooms she has designed. “My Web developer recommended Go Daddy because of its pricing and its easyto-use tools, said Rosene. However, her Web developer soon had to move on ” and Dona was left with a site she knew nothing about. After having issues with another Web developer, she decided to try working with Go Daddy directly. To her delight, she found that dealing with Go Daddy was easier than dealing with any of her developers. Many factors influence your site’s visibility and how quickly and easily visitors can locate it. Understanding search engines and search result rankings are important keys to getting your Web site listed higher in search results. Keep reading for more ideas on how to increase your Web site traffic. Editorial Comments & Reviews “Companies like Go Daddy have made it easy and affordable for anyone to acquire their own domain name and immediately manage it through a consumer-friendly control panel.” – Ron Jackson, Domain Name Journal editor DOMAIN NAME VARIATIONS You should consider registering any variations of your domain name(s) that your visitors may possibly mistype in their browser when searching for your site—the cost is minimal, but the return on investment can be tremendous. Start by registering the most common alternatives to your chosen domain name: such as misspellings, alternate spellings or other names your business may be known as. These are simple variations or misspellings of your domain name, such as “yourepersonaldomainname.com” or “yourpersonaldomanname.com. ” While you can’t anticipate all of the possible alternatives, starting with the simple and obvious alternatives can save your customers hours trying to figure out why they can’t locate your site. You can forward these variations of your domain name to your actual Web site so that your customers or visitors who mistype your domain name will still find themselves at your Web site. GETTING TRAFFIC TO YOUR WEB SITE Driving visitors to your site is one of the greatest, and most important, challenges on the Web. We’ve already discussed one effective and affordable way to increase traffic and market your Web site, Go Daddy’s Business Registration (see page 5). But perhaps the most powerful tool for increasing your Web site’s traffic is making sure your site is optimized for search engines. Your Web site may be perfect, but if it isn’t designed and organized to optimize search engine listing, it may never be seen. Most Web site traffic and online purchases come from search engines or directories like Google™ Yahoo!® or MSN® Internet users enter keywords on these search , . engines in order to receive a listing of the most relevant Web sites to their keywords. Although a keyword may return thousands of results, most internet users will only browse through the first 10, maybe 20 entries in the results and may actually visit less than five of the pages listed before searching for a new keyword. Traffic Blazer® makes it easy to prepare, analyze, optimize and submit your Web pages to key search engines and directories. While pay-per-click can be a costly solution, Web visibility is guaranteed for those willing to pay for it. Pay-per-click is usually based on advertiser bidding, where the advertisers bid on the highest ranking for a given search phrase. The highest bidder gains the highest ranking; the second-highest bidder gains the second-highest ranking; and so on. The advertisers are then billed the bid amount each time a visitor clicks to the site via the paid-inclusion provider’s search engine listing. Although bidding is the most common way to determine the per-click cost, some pay-per-click providers charge a flat click-through fee. Pay-per-click programs are offered by Google™ and LookSmart® both of which provide listings for a number of leading search engines, directories and Web portals. In search engines, pay-per-click listings generally show up either as Sponsored Listings or as regular search results. In some cases, the listing will mention the per-click cost to the advertiser. Traffic Blazer® has partnered with the Internet’s leading providers of pay-per-click ® services; Google™ and Kanoodle. Joining these programs will add your business to the search results of the Internet’s top search engines, directories and portals. For more information, visit www.godaddy.com. At 18, she was faced with eviction and the task of having 24 hours to find a home for “Spike,” her handsome German Shepherd. Colleen vowed to do whatever she could to prevent this from ever happening again to anyone—dog or human. Colleen now spreads her message as an international animal trainer/behaviorist, TV personality and author. And while her love and support for animals is legendary, it was support of another kind that brought her to Go Daddy. “Because of a problem with a credit card showing fraudulent charges, I had to block my card,” says Colleen. Go Daddy then made several attempts to bill the card, with no success, and was forced to take Colleen’s site off the Internet. “If I had used any other company I’d have been waiting forever on hold,” says Colleen, “only to then wait a week or more for my site to come back up. I panicked because my site is my business...my life! Before I even hung up the phone with Go Daddy, however, the site was back up and running. I was floored!” “When I need to call Go Daddy, I don’t ever feel that normal dread associated with calling the phone or cable company. I’m a super busy person and am happy to know that my problems will be solved in a timely and friendly way. I can’t express how much it means to me. In this fast-paced, busy, technological world, Go Daddy sets the precedent for what companies should be about: Customer Service, Efficiency and Reliability.” Colleen’s clients have nicknamed her “The Oprah of the Pet World” for her sensitive and humorous appeal. As for Go Daddy, we’re simply called the “#1 Overall Best Registrar,” for good reason. Just ask Colleen Paige. COPYRIGHT REGISTRATION When you value your Web site or source code and the hard work that went into it, you need indisputable legal proof that you own your work. And that proof is a Registration Certificate issued by the U.S. Copyright Office. Its step-by-step wizard and expert assistance guides you through completing the copyright application in just minutes. Once completed, simply upload your work. The Go Daddy team of experts will review it for accuracy and compliance with federal copyright laws. Then file it with the U.S. Copyright Office. Editorial Comments & Reviews “Go Daddy offers bargain-basement pricing on a full range of Internet services, including email, Web site development tools and hosting, e-Commerce services (shopping carts, etc.) and ‘secure site’ certificates for customer peace of mind.” – Daniel Kehrer, BizBest columnist THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COPYRIGHT, PATENT AND TRADEMARK A Copyright is a form of protection provided to authors of “original works of authorship” both published and unpublished. Copyright protects the form of , expression rather than the subject of the expression. Federal copyright registrations are issued by the U.S. Copyright Office. They give the copyright owner exclusive rights to reproduce the copyrighted work, to prepare derivative works, to distribute copies of the work and to perform and display the work publicly. A Trademark is a word, name, symbol or device which indicates the source of a product and distinguishes it from the products of others. A service mark identifies and distinguishes the source of a service instead of a product. Email Us: support@godaddy.com 24/7 Domain Help: 480-505-8899 www.GoDaddy.com 24/7 Tech Support: 480-505-8877 page 19 Chapter 5 - Security And Protection Trademarks are issued by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. They prevent others from using a confusingly similar mark, but cannot prevent others from making the same products or from selling the same products under a clearly different mark. A Patent is the grant of a property right to an inventor. What is granted is the right to exclude others from using, offering for sale, selling or importing the invention. Patents are issued by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. c-Site® eliminates the confusion and complexity from the copyright process. Its step-by-step wizard and expert assistance guide you along the way. DEVIOUS DOMAIN NAMES Whether you’re new to domain names or a seasoned veteran, you should consider registering any under-handed versions of your domain name(s) to protect your personal and professional identity (harmful domain name alternatives can include, but are not limited to, “ihateyourpersonaldomainname” or “yourpersonaldomainnamesucks”). While you can’t anticipate all the possible alternatives, starting with the simple removal of the more obvious domain names can save you legal hassles and frustration in the event a third party attempts to use these names in a way that is harmful to you or your business. In the event that someone else does own a harmful version of your domain name, consider backordering that name and getting it off the market the second it becomes available. Just as a trademark protects a logo and a patent protects an invention, a federal copyright protects your Web site, literary works and more! Customers say... If you have ever tried to copyright or trademark via the government, it can become a convoluted mess. c-Site® made it so easy. Having the express service was a definite plus. I received my copyright certificate last week, much faster than the four months I was expecting. For anyone with information that needs to be protected, c-Site® is the way to go. – James M. THE GO DADDY 10-POINT VALUE PLAN Go Daddy delivers superior value to customers by adhering to a 10-point value plan, ensuring that it is the very best choice for your domain name and Web services needs. 1. Guaranteed renewal price. You’ll never pay more to renew your domain name than the rate you paid when you initially registered it, or what Go Daddy’s registration rate was when you transferred. (The only exceptions would be if the price the registry charges increased, or if you took advantage of a limited-time, special price. If the registry increases Go Daddy’s cost, yours will go up only by that amount, never more.) Risk-free, money-back guarantee transfers. A domain transfer occasionally fails. This is usually due to your former registrar trying to keep your money, even though that registrar is legally required to comply with your transfer request. With Go Daddy, you’re protected by a Rapid Transfer System™ that saves time and eliminates errors, extracting critical information automatically. You no longer need to find it and type it yourself. And there’s a Transfer Concierge team trained, dedicated and available to you 24/7. Lastly, Go Daddy transfers are absolutely risk free and fully refundable. If your transfer to Go Daddy fails for any reason, you will be notified and issued a refund. Guaranteed. 2. 3. More free, value-added services with every domain. Go Daddy is proud to have you as a customer and wants you to get the most out of your domain ownership. With every domain purchase, you receive all the following, FREE: Hosting with Web site, Quick Blog, Complete Email ($9.99 value) change of registrant; parked or “For Sale” page; domain locking; status alerts; domain forwarding; domain masking; total DNS control and 100 email forwards. Go Daddy’s super-low prices, intuitive tools, Rapid Transfer System™ and concierge support make it a snap. 7. Just-right, affordable hosting and server options. Superior domain search and management tools. Go Daddy’s domain search and portfolio management tools are second to none. Apply your changes or add additional services—it’s fast and easy. 9. Fierce protection of your personal information. Go Daddy works hard to prevent your data from being “mined. And unlike ” some of our competitors who will happily sell your information to anyone for a price, Go Daddy will never under any circumstance make it available to third parties, unless legally required to do so. (Please do understand, though, that information in the Whois database is public domain. Go Daddy does everything possible to prevent screen access to it, but under certain circumstances, it can be obtained.) 10. Unique, valuable and innovative software and services.
