Scope of Position: The Community Outreach Worker under the direction of the Clinical Manager, Community Based Services, provides
a wide range of clinical services to clients and their families who have been affected by their own or others’ harmful involvement with
substance abuse, problem gambling, nicotine addiction or other problem behaviour(s). These services include assessment, intervention,
consultation, treatment planning, individual and group process. The Community Outreach Worker will be involved in the planning and
delivery of programs in health promotion and programs based on community development principles. The incumbent in this position is
an advocate for the client and the community creating links with the community and its agencies. The Community Outreach Worker
functions as a member of the Community Based Services team and in a collaborative consultative and cooperative manner with other
Addiction Services programs. Sound working understanding of the community health approach and community services systems is
required. Also provides services to other programs within Addiction Services.
  -      Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or Bachelor of Science in Nursing with 1 year related experience
  -      Registration/licensure with the relevant Nova Scotia regulatory body, such as the Nova Scotia Association of Social Workers
         or the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia is required
  -      Due to the sensitive nature of the position, must possess the ability to exercise wise, fair and honest judgement in all
         matters. Must have the ability to initiate program modification, change and growth through well-designated and organized
         proposals. Professional behaviours must be in accordance with Ethical Standards and Code of Ethics.
  -      Knowledge of various treatment theories, practice and adult education principles. Knowledge of Harmful Involvement, Harm
         Reduction and Stages of Change treatment models as well as a integrated level of knowledge and skills; effective application
         of the personal qualities, skills and techniques involved in the field of addiction-related programming
  -      A good understanding of social services, education system and health care delivery systems and their interaction with the
         needs of Addiction Services clients
  -      Ability to make sound decisions regarding client care and to work cooperatively with other professionals, para-professionals
         and community
  -      Good understanding of community organization and development with regards to addressing issues with substance abuse,
         problem gambling or other problem behaviour
  -      Knowledge of adult learning principles
  -      Interpersonal skills, intra-personal reflective skills, critical analysis of social issues
  -      Knowledge of psycho-educational system in the field of harmful involvement
  -      A good understanding of community organization and development regarding addressing issues with substance abuse,
         problem gambling or other problem behaviour is required
  -      Commit to maintain and protect patient, client and personal safety on an ongoing basis
  -      Annually access the training and education on patient, client and personal safety made available by GASHA
