Service:         Compass Harrow
Reports To:      Service Manager


Purpose:
Compass aims to direct all service users into recovery from drug and/or alcohol dependence at
the earliest opportunity, while recognising that a significant number of individuals may not yet be
motivated or be in a position to stop using substances. The priorities for Compass are therefore:
      To enable people to make informed choices about their drug and alcohol consumption
       and health and social circumstances

      To actively influence and support client motivation to stop using drugs and alcohol

      To maintain the health and social status of individuals by reducing the potential for
       damage from problematic drug and alcohol use

      To reduce the risks of drug and alcohol related harm to the communities in which our
       clients live, including the need to address behaviours that put public health at risk or
       contribute to offending and the fear of crime

      To guide our clients towards complete recovery and facilitate their re-integration into
       society

      We seek to make early contact with substance misusers and provide relevant, positive
       and safe responses to their health and social care needs.

Outline of the Service:
Compass Harrow provides integrated specialist substance misuse treatment services for adults
and young people, aiming to progressively move service users towards stable and productive
drug-free lives. The multidisciplinary team offer:

      Open access advice, information and harm reduction services

      Specialist prescribing including detoxification, maintenance, and symptomatic regimes for
       opiate, alcohol and stimulant users

      Individual and group-based structured psychosocial interventions

      Dual diagnosis treatment and professional development

      Accident and Emergency alcohol clinic and

      Young people’s specialist substance misuse services

All members of the team work with the Service Manager, Senior Practitioner and Senior Nurse
Practitioner to identify and develop expertise in areas of specialism within the broader service
delivery. As well as on-site service provision, team members offer satellite clinics in agreed
target locations; workforce development to other professionals; and consultation to the
professional and non-professional community of Harrow.

Outline of the Post:

The Dual Diagnosis Lead is responsible for working in partnership with substance misuse and
mental health service providers and commissioners to:
      Plan, monitor and deliver dual diagnosis services in Harrow;
      Provide specialist substance misuse expertise in the joint assessment, treatment and
        care planning for substance misusers with complex mental health needs;
      To plan, deliver and evaluate dual diagnosis training across Harrow;
      To provide specialist dual diagnosis input into in-patient wards and hostels;
      To provide group dual diagnosis supervision to CMHTs and mental health in- patient
        staff
      To provide consultation to mental health and substance misuse service providers
        concerning dual diagnosis.

The post may require some evening/weekend/bank holiday working.


Key Activities and Responsibilities:

People Development


1)         Identify and map training needs of mental health and substance misuse services
           concerning dual diagnosis.

2)         Provide specialist group supervision to mental health professionals to support skill
           development in the treatment and care of service users with complex mental health
           needs.

3)         Provide specialist consultation and advice to mental health and substance misuse
           services concerning dual diagnosis issues.

Clinical

1)         To undertake joint assessment, treatment and care planning of service users with
           complex needs.

2)         To undertake joint risk assessments of service users as above.

3)         Provide highly specialised clinical and professional advice and leadership in
           developing/providing specialist care packages for service users with a dual diagnosis
           across Harrow.

4)         Deliver care interventions and specialist advice in a variety of settings to promote
           flexibility and choice for service users.

5)         Keep up to date with evidence based practice in order to meet the responsibilities of a
           Nurse Senior Practitioner.

Service delivery

1)         To provide dual diagnosis training to mental health and substance misuse services.

2)     To participate in and contribute to the strategic development of dual diagnosis service
       provision in Harrow.


Practice Development


1)    Network with other Dual Diagnosis practitioners across London in order to provide and
      receive clinical support and act as a resource for staff within your own team(s)

2)    In conjunction with the Service Manager/Assistant Clinical Director, ensure all Compass
      practice guidance and models of clinical governance and evaluation are adhered to.


Communication

1)    Establish effective empathic communication with service users and carers.

2)    Establish effective, professional communication with Compass Harrow, community mental
      health teams, service user and carer groups, in-patient wards, hostels and other
      stakeholders as relevant.

3)    Liaise regularly with the Service Manager to ensure effective communication systems.

4)    Contribute to reports for courts, social services and legal bodies as required.

5)    Adhere to the Compass confidentiality policy.

6)    Contribute to the preparation of all relevant reports and returns as directed by the Service
      Manager.




     A current NMC/GSCC registration and CRB disclosure check will be undertaken before
                                appointment can be confirmed
                 A current driving licence and use of car would be preferable
