									                        ArcGIS 10 Training and Resources

1. Use ArcGIS with KDFWR template
   KDFWR template is a tool for KDFWR ArcGIS users to easily access GIS data.
   Here is how to use it:
    Open http://fw.ky.gov/kfwis/arcgis/
    Click “Use ArcGIS with KDFWR template.doc”

2. ESRI Virtual Campus
   This is the simplest and quickest way to learn ArcGIS. You start by watching video
   and listening to an ESRI instructor for about 45 to 60 minutes.. You then download
   exercise and do hands-on exercise using ArcMap which can take about 2 hours.
   Finally you can take a short 10 questions exam. Before you can take the class, ESRI
   website will eventually ask you to create a login and password. Go to
   http://training.esri.com/gateway/index.cfm?fa=catalog.gateway

   3 recommended FREE classes are:

      Using ArcMap in ArcGIS Desktop 10
       In Search box, type in “ArcMap 10” then click the first one on the list. This class
       is about overall use of ArcMap. It takes 3 hours to complete.

      Editing in ArcGIS Desktop 10
       In Search box, type in “Edit ArcGIS 10” then click the first one on the list. This
       class is about editing. It takes 3 hours to complete.

      Getting Started with GIS (for ArcGIS 10)
       In Search box, type in “Started with GIS” then click the first one on the list. This
       class stresses the concept of GIS and introduces you to ArcGIS. It has 3 modules
       and each module takes 2-3 hours to complete.

3. ArcGIS tutorial
   This is a hands-on and detail way to learn ArcGIS 10. There are 13 ArcGIS 10
   tutorials. The most important one is Editing.

   This tutorial data should be in your external hard drive (Misc/Tutorial). If you do not
   have this folder, bring the external hard drive to Daniel Vichitbandha (x 4535). Once
   tutorial data is installed in your computer, do the following to access the tutorial to
   work with the data:
    Open ArcMap 10
    Go to Help  ArcGIS Desktop Help. Click Contents tab.
    Click Essentials Library What is ArcGIS? ArcGIS tutorials
    Click Introduction to the Editing tutorial to read from the computer monitor (if
       you have double monitor) or Download the PDF to print it.

4. ArcGIS Desktop Help
    Open ArcMap 10
    Go to Help -> ArcGIS Desktop Help. Click Search tab.
    Type in a question will return topics to help you complete specific tasks

   Important Note: Using SHIFT F1 is helpful for returning context specific help about
   menu. For example, you want to know about   , do the following:
    Press SHIFT and F1. Cursor with question mark will display
      Click on     . Information about Identify tool will display.

5. ArcMap basic
   This is a reading material and similar to the ESRI Virtual Campus but more in depth.
   You can open ArcMap to follow along but not necessary. If you do the ArcGIS
   tutorial, you probably do not need to do this. To access it, do the following:
    Open ArcMap 10
    Go to Help -> ArcGIS Desktop Help. Click Contents tab.
    Click Professional Library  Mapping and Visualization  ArcMap basics

5. Harley Weaver’s document - Drawing a Private Lands Map
   This document shows private land biologist how to draw map.
   a. Open http://fw.ky.gov/kfwis/arcgis/
   b. Click “Drawing a Private Lands Map ArcGIS 10.doc”

6. KDFWR GIS Help Files
   This website contains the list of various documents written by KFWIS staff and
   Harley Weaver.
    Open http://fw.ky.gov/kfwis/arcgis/

7. ArcGIS Resource Center
   This support is very comprehensive. It contains Technical Articles, Web Help,
   Discussion Forums, Scripts, Whitepapers, and more.
    Go to http://resources.arcgis.com/
