									Title: The Notebook

Director: Nick Cassavetes

Date: 2004
The characters are represented as a man and a woman as they were just a boy and girl before
in their teenage years but now that couple of years have gone past, they’ve become older and
mature. They have both moved on because Allie’s mother didn’t approve of her being with a
working class boy that works in milling company, receiving the logs and stripping the bark as
Allie is from an upper class family where she doesn’t have to work but is getting an education.
There is a massive difference is social class with both of them. When they meet again they are
both emotionally still in love with each other. Noah they guy is represented as a down to earth,
honest and truthful person because he stuck to his promise that he made to Allie the woman a
few years back when they were together and dating. She is amazed by it and in that moment is
where she started to fall for him all over again.

The scene I’m summarizing is when Allie comes back to Noah. While trying on her wedding
dress, Allie is shocked to read about Noah completing the house on the newspaper.. She visits
Noah in Seabrook and he invites her to dinner, during which Allie tells Noah about her
engagement. Noah questions whether Allie's future husband is a good man and she reassures
him that he is. Later in the evening, Noah invites Allie to come back tomorrow. They go for a
boat ride and she gets the feelings back for Noah she had a long time ago and asks her why he
never wrote to her but he did everyday for a year but it was Allie’s mother that took away the
letters. They both make love and spent the night in their dream house.

The film uses the narrative structure of linear because all the events that happen are all in
chronological order. There’s a beginning, middle and an end which also isn’t broken so there is
no skipping bits.

The Notebook is shot in live action throughout the whole of the film, there is no animation
used this may be because the director wanted to present it as a romantic film which it is and
thought it might not turn out to seem like that if he added any sort of animation or combined
both together.
The characters are represented as a man and a woman as they were just a boy and girl before
in their teenage years but now that couple of years have gone past, they’ve become older and
mature. They have both moved on because Allie’s mother didn’t approve of her being with a

The very first camera shot that’s used is an overhead shot, this is used so that we could see
where they are, what’s around them and we have clear view of them both on the boat. After
that there’s a wide angle shot which is also used so that we have an idea of what kind of
environment they’re in. There’s also an extreme close up of the face of them both possibly to
show how they are both connecting with each other through facial expressions and the mood
of each character which in that scene it shows they are happy.

When they edited the film they cut the scene in small parts to show each of the characters
facial expressions and what they are saying each time, so the audience can see how slowly they
are falling in love with each other again. They cut the scene in parts when they are in different
environments to like when they are happy it shows her with the swans and the sun is out which
gives the audience a happy feeling that both characters are enjoying their time together. The
producers then edited the scene when they are both not happy with each other because they
didn’t write back to each other so, there is heavy rain to symbolise their mood as sad, upset
and anger. The scenes are not faded they cut each parts suddenly, to show both characters
actions and reactions as it is a one to one conversation.

The film contains both diegetic and non diegetic sounds because it has background music as
well as dialogues from the characters. The music in the background when they are on the boat
with the swans there is a soft, light, romantic type of background music with birds humming.
This symbolises the mood is calm and sweet. When Noah realises he still loves her and she gets
angry why he didn’t write to her, there is an intimate kissing scene where there is music in the
background which makes the audience feel as though they are happy to be with each other
again and the sweet sound of re-uniting again.
They are both wearing costumes that they did when they were young but she is wearing a
expensive dress where as he is not. His just wearing a shirt rather a dirty one which shows he’s
social class which is still low and works as a lard labourer. The workers get dirty and don’t
bother but for Allie, money and cleanliness is part of her childhood as she was dressed nicely
and neatly at all times.

There are not many props used in the scene but the main prop is the boat. They are both on
it and Noah is rowing the boat which shows he is in control of everything at that scene and a
sense of masculinity. The boat is a romantic prop used in the scene because a couple can go
anywhere with it alone and spend quality time with each other which Noah and Allie want to do
because they have been separated for a long time. There is a bit in the scene where she is
amazed that he has built the house because he originally said it was for her but she left and is
puzzled why he still built it. He’s reply is what made a significant remark and showed the kind of
person Noah is. He said to her that he promised to her he will and at that point she felt really
bad for going away. It hurt her a lot so out of anger she chucked the food at the swans rather
than giving it carefully and slowly, this symbolises her mood that she is angry and frustrated.
The other prop that is used is all the swans around the boat because that builds up a romantic
kind of atmosphere at that time.

The make-up used is at a professional level because the make-up done on each character is
different as they are both different gender. The film is based on two people from the 1940's so,
the makeup would have to be the kind of make-up and style they used on females at that time.
Allie's make up is more of a subtle and rich make up that makes her look mature that she is
about to get married and enter a new life. Noah seems to be the opposite because he had gone
a bit crazy after his father’s death he did not give into much of his appearance and gave most of
his time building the house. Noah is shown to have a beard to symbolise he’s a male and that
time has been passed to show the physical difference of the transformation of Noah from a boy
to a man.

The target audience for this film would be heterosexual couples, young teenagers and middle
aged men and women that are married because it can refer to them personally or they might
just enjoy watching it with their partners.
