Bully Prevention Lesson #4 Bullying Information Objectives: 1) Students will be able to identify strategies to avoid victimization 2) Students will be able to identify the Help, Assert yourself, Humor, Owning avoid bullying. Materials needed: Blind fold Game board layout Information about teachers Time: 5 min Strategies: Introduce yourself and the topic: -Today we are going to learn about ways to avoid being victimized. -Who can tell me what victimization is? (Make sure to give them time to answer) Explanation of game: quickly divide the class into teams of two and come up with a time name. One conflict manager should keep score by writing on the board the other should read off the questions. Play the game Conclude: -Review over the information you just learned. Quiz the students. -Suggestions: -What is the assert yourself method? -How can we avoid victimization? -Explain the help method to me? -Come up with more question with your partner before class. Content: References: 3 min 15 min 3 min - Strategies to Avoid Victimization: Game Directions: Divide the class into two teams. Have each team choose a team caption give them 30 seconds choose a team caption then choose one for them. Each team will take turns choosing from the board. The team caption will decide who to send up from his/her team. Score will be kept by one of the Conflict Managers. If I can arrange it a prize will be give to the winning team or I will arrange something with the teachers to give the winning team extra points or free time. If student cant answer the question them selves they will receive half point for asking a team mate. Act it out: 10 Points Conflict Manager: This skit deals with the Help Method: The Help Method is seeking assistance from and adult, or peer when a potentially threatening situation arises. Quickly choose two partners and act out this skit. Tommy: Hey stupid what do you think you are doing? Bill: I am just going to class. Tommy: Whatever Stupid!! (Pushes Bill) Get out of my hall. Bill: Come on someone help me out here. Nick: Tommy lay off the poor guy is just going to class. Ill go get (Fill in the name of your teachers) Mrs. Astle 20 points Conflict Manager: This question deals with the Assert Yourself Method: With this method you make assertive statements to the bully addressing your feelings about the bullys behavior. Choose one partner and act out the following skit. Sarah: You are so ugly, you must of been dropped when you were born. Heather: I dont like it when you talk like that. I am leaving (walks away) Conflict Manager: Now come up with one assertive statement by yourself. Assertive statements often begin with I statements. Such as in the skit I dont like.. You have 20 seconds. (Time the student) 30 Points Conflict Manager: This question deals with the Humor method. Humor is used to de-escalate a situation. You and a partner have two minutes to prepare a skit using the humor technique. Example: When insulted about hairstyle say Gee, I didnt know you cared enough to notice Pictionary: 10 Points Conflict Manager: In 20 seconds draw a picture on the board of someone walking away from a conflict The teacher will be the judge if you completed this task. 20 Points Conflict Manager: With your left hand if you are right handed or right hand if you are left handed. In 45 seconds draw a picture of someone being verbally abused the teacher will be the judge it you completed this task. 30 points Conflict Manager: while blind folded draw a picture of two things you could do when you are getting teased. The teacher will be the judge if you completed this task. Test your knowledge: 10 Points Conflict Manager: An example of owning a discount it Yeah, this is a bad haircut. The lawn mower got out of control this weekend. Give an example of someone Owning a discount. You have 25 seconds to think of one. 20 Points Conflict Manager: Tell the class two ways to avoid bullying and two ways to take a stand against bullying. After student has told the class. Give them the list of other ways to avoid bullying. Ways to take a stand/ and avoid bullying: 1. Stop rumors 2. Dont pass on a hurtful note. 3. Speak up to a bully: We dont do that here 4. Say hi to a new student or someone you dont know very well. 5. Ask someone new to join you at lunch. 6. Include someone new in one of your activities. 7. Join up with someone who is bothered and take he or her out of the situation. 8. Let adults know when some needs help. 9. Stick togther, and stand up for each other 10. Have the courage to tell an adult 11. Avoid hazardous situation 30 points Conflict Manager: List three ways you personally can Prevent bullying and come up with one ways as a team you could prevent bullying. You have 2 minutes.
