Directions:
Try to find at least five (5) or more of your Poetry Terms being used in ONE song. Use FIVE different devices. Two (2) of
the devices must come from the figurative language list. Use the list of preferred terms to find out which terms are likely to
be used in lyrics. Remember the restrictions on the kinds of lyrics you can use.

     1. Find a song that has examples of 5 of your poetry terms.
     2. Copy the lyrics onto a document. Enlarge lyrics to 12 point font.
     3. Highlight the examples you chose. Label the poem by showing the poetic device that is used. Briefly explain why you
know that the poetry terms is used.
     4. Staple the lyrics to the back of your assignment. Your assignment must be neat and easy to read.

1. SONG RESTRICTIONS: The songs you choose
                  a) cannot glorify violence or drugs
                  b) cannot use graphic sexual descriptions of any kind
                  c) cannot focus too much on sex
                  d) cannot use ANY foul language
Think of it this way. The song should be appropriate for Mrs. Miller’s eyes and ears. Also, this
assignment is a school assignment that has a purpose beyond just sharing lyrics. You are actually
going to learn about poetry through the songs you like.

2. Preferred Poetry Terms to Use: metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, pun, oxymoron,
symbolism, apostrophe, irony, allusion, alliteration, assonance, refrain
