PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE AND NATIONAL ANTHEM

1. Pledge of Allegiance
State Statute 118.06 (amended in 2001 Wisconsin Act 16) states:

"118.06 flag and pledge of allegiance, (1) Every school board and the governing
body of every private school shall cause the U.S. flag to be displayed in the
schoolroom or from a flag staff on each school ground during the school hours of
each school day. (2) Every public school shall offer the pledge of allegiance or
the national anthem in grades one to twelve each school day. No student shall
be compelled, against his objections or those of his parents or guardian, to recite
the pledge or sing the anthem."

Administrative Policy 7.40 of the Milwaukee Board of School Directors adds:

“In keeping with this, students may decline to recite the pledge of allegiance and
may refrain from saluting the flag. Students refraining from such participation
have the responsibility to respect the rights and interests of classmates who do
wish to participate in the ceremony. If students choose not to participate, they
will not have to explain their reasons for refusing to recite the pledge, but they
should remain silent during the rendering of the salute or pledge. They may
decline to participate in the salute to the flag and the pledge of allegiance without
    securing permission from their parents.”

2. National Anthem
Use of National Anthems other than the Star Spangled Banner in School
Assembly Programs Administrative Policy 7.40 of the Milwaukee Board of School
   Directors states:

"Whenever the national anthem of another country or of any racial or ethnic
group is played and/or sung in school assembly programs, the national anthem of
the United States (The Star Spangled Banner) is to be played or sung first. The
audience will be asked to rise and remain standing for both anthems."
