Students’ Rights
If you walk into any high school in the United States you always hear something
about students’ rights. Yes of course you have rights as a student in high school, how
many rights you have though may depend on what state you are living in. Students’ rights
are not only considered by the federal government but also the state government as well.
We all have the right to freedom of speech, do we not? But while you are on
school ground your school board also has the right to censor you if they feel it is
inappropriate. Obviously students can not write obscene language in the yearbook and
newspapers. Students also can not introduce or push other students to do illegal acts or
tell students to disrupt the basic days of school life. In some states kids have the right to
pass out leaflets, organize peaceful rallies, and circulate petitions. As long as students do
these things at the correct time and in the correct manner their school officials should
have no complaints. Students who are protesting or handing out fliers should not block
hallways or disrupt the normal function of the school. Also, if you school has a
reasonable guideline as to when students can pass out papers or protest you need to
follow those guidelines. Students also have the right to organize clubs and activities as
long as you are not being offensive or disruptive to the rest of the student body. Most
states have a great deal of student rights.
