Nothing arising following meeting of the 10.11.11
BS welcomed JW to the meeting (standing in for Chris Owen St Philips Chambers).
BS requested that SJA send him copies of past Minutes of the International Committee
SJA to send BS minutes asap
DP updated the committee on his successful visit to Lyon in December 2011. The seminar will take
place in September this year, the following year in December. Guests from Lyon also attended the
President’s Dinner. It was agreed that for the next President’s Dinner we should have an
International Table. The work experience programme with French students will continue and has
proved to be successful. The programme will commence in September through to end of February.
Emily and Lisa Marie have had work experience with solicitor firms and barristers’ Chambers during
their time in Birmingham.They have been staying in student accommodation at the College of Law.
DP stated that from past experience lodging with families does not work.
BS requested that Emily produce a Note of what the programme entails, how it works etc.
TMD confirmed that No5 Chambers are happy to be placed on the rota for future visits.

The event in Mumbai took place in November 2011. SC attended the event and reported it went
well. With more Indian firms coming on stream and with ABS’s in the marketplace opportunities in
India should be on the increase.
Nothing further to report from the visit by the Chinese delegates (senior directors in legal
education/training) from the Ministry of Justice, China, that took place on the 24/25 October 2011.
The committee were asked to note that Sissy Hu has no connection with the BLS.
It was noted that BS and AH had received invitations from the Hong Kong Trade & Economic Office
to attend a reception at the Banqueting House, Whitehall on the 31st January.
SC reported that the 3 day visit to Istanbul will take place w/c 19 March 2012. This will be a low key
fact finding mission. The Turkish Consulate will hold a Reception for us on the Tuesday night and the
next day can be utilised for business meetings.
With regard to flights to Turkey, NS stated that he has now made contact with the President of
Turkish Airlines and he has confirmed that he will be able to assist with the cost of the flights but
will require approximate numbers. It was agreed that this may be difficult to arrange due to personal
requirements regarding flight times etc. SC stated that there may be a possibility of a small grant
from the UKTi but would need to know numbers asap.
TMD stated that Emma Edhem has links with TBCCI and will make enquiries as to a possible meeting.
Committee members to identify business contacts for meetings

Discussion took place about possible seminars in Dubai. At the moment mainly interested in Bribery
