Hot Climate Initiative in North Carolina
Prior to Receiving Training

 Measures consisted of largely window and door
  replacement and carpentry repairs.
 Very limited combustion analysis
 Air sealing focused mostly around windows, doors
  and interior walls

Training Received
 Between July and November 2003, all 33
  weatherization providers received training

 New River Center for Energy Research and Training
and J & J Weatherization was enlisted to provide
  classroom and hands-on training.

Points Learned
 Training emphasized whole-house weatherization, not
  just cooling-only measures
 Even in hot climates, savings in heating energy drives
  cost-effectiveness of most measures
 Measures that would reduce heating load also reduces
  cooling load
 Mostly not cost-effective to replace windows and
  doors

Action Plan
 Provide Hot Climate – Whole House Weatherization
training to all weatherization staff and crew (both
  agency employees and subcontractors)
 Provide Mobile Home Weatherization training
 Provide training for Energy Auditors
 Require accountability by monitoring

Action Taken

 Adopted Priority Lists of Weatherization Measures
  for:
       Single Family Homes
       Mobile Homes

 Issued Weatherization Installation Standards

Training Since
 August 2004 – April 2005 NRCERT and J & J
provided Mobile Home Weatherization in Lynchburg,
  Va.
 August and September 2005 - NRCERT and
  J & J Weatherization provided whole-house
  weatherization training to all subcontractors
 August through June 2007 – Indiana Weatherization
Training Center has provided 7 sessions of whole-
  house weatherization

Training Since
 October 2007 – 48 energy auditors received auditor
and combustion training at the Indiana Training
  Center
