PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Under general direction, assigns, plans and monitors the work of energy management personnel engaged
in the operations, repair and programming of building automation systems. Monitors baseline energy
consumption to determine goals and objectives; monitors benchmarks and performance; and prepares
written and oral reports on outcomes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

      Supervises the operation, maintenance and repair work associated with the campus building
       automation and energy management systems.

      Schedules, assigns, plans and monitors the work of energy management personnel performing a
       variety of energy management projects.

      Defines and accomplishes established goals and objectives of the Energy Management Program.

      Oversees the work of contractors, vendors and maintenance support services for repairs and
       modifications to systems and equipment.

      Measures and evaluates work performance, develops schedules, develops training and work
       procedure guidelines, and prioritizes workloads.

      Monitors baseline energy consumption to determine goals and objectives; monitors benchmarks and
       performance; and prepares written and oral reports on outcomes.

      Hires and evaluates staff.

      Prepares material and labor costs for project estimates.

      Monitors time, payroll, work order, material, equipment and other energy management records and
       submit reports.

      Assists engineers in design requirements and plan reviews.

      Ensures budgeting guidelines are met. Prioritizes unit expectations to stay within budget and assists
       in preparation of Capital and Operations budget.

      Monitors the activities of subordinates.

      Inspects work in progress to insure its completion within allotted time limits and for acceptable quality
       standards.

      Trains and instructs employees in new methods or procedures, changes in safety regulations, work
       policies, codes and standards, and remains alert for opportunities to effectively decrease costs.

      Performs database uploads and down loads to provide DDC controllers with current programs.

      Operates and monitors computer control system equipment; detects source and nature of system
       problems; makes adjustments to change operating parameters of the system due to emergencies,
       malfunctions and change requirements or to optimize operations.

      Provides technical advice and support to subordinates.

      Performs emergency corrections to neutralize alarm conditions and restore proper operation.

      Perform hardware and software repairs and verifies correct system and control sequence operations.

      Makes recommendations for system upgrades/replacement.

      May perform scheduled and unscheduled remote start and stop of equipment.

      Updates air handlers’ schedules upon request for air conditioning services.

      Imports and audits data from a variety of computer systems and compiles energy management
       reports.

      Conducts energy auditing and provides reports by accumulating data from multiple automation
       systems and/or software support programs.

      May develop macros and queries to produce energy management reports.

      Evaluates HVAC and control systems and develops and implements programs to reduce energy
       consumption.

      Reviews, modifies and implements programming changes to building automation system to ensure
       efficient and effective system operations and conformance with standards and guidelines.

      Monitors and adjusts process loops for optimum performance.

      Develops operator qualifications, training and responsibility parameters for continual operation. Trains
       appropriate staff.

      Calibrates repairs and replaces building automation system sensing devises to specifications.

      May dispatch trouble calls to appropriate personnel to respond to customer needs.

      Troubleshoots power supplies, controllers, and transducers. Takes corrective actions.

      Performs backup and restoration of critical system files and maintains archives.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

      Knowledge of large-scale automation systems
      Knowledge of engineering principles and practices.
      Knowledge of microprocessor technology and programing.
      Knowledge of computerized energy management, and building control systems.
      Knowledge of network Topology and architecture.
      Knowledge of PID loop tuning.
      Knowledge of applicable controller configuration.
      Knowledge of instrumentation, sensing devices and calibration techniques.
      Skill in applying Supervisory techniques.
      Skill using personal computer for report writing and spreadsheet analysis.
      Skill in effective communication, both verbal and written.
      Skill in current loop wiring and checkout.
      Skill with basic multimeter usage.
      Ability to troubleshoot controllers for proper function.
      Ability to analyze complex control sequences and resulting operations, and to develop innovations that
       solve difficult technical problems.
      Ability to acquire through training and on the job experience specialized knowledge in rapidly changing
       technology and applications.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
            Frequent walking or moving, climbing ladders, work in small, confined spaces, and working at
             heights.
            Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 60 pounds.
            Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject
             to resolution of conflicts.
            Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions.
            Drives University vehicle and/or cart to campus site.

EQUIPMENT USED:
            Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to:               computer
             workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and
             associated computer/technology peripherals.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/GIVEN:
      This position receives managerial review of objectives.
      This position may provide work direction of activities to others for completion of project related tasks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Nine years experience with energy management engineering or building automation systems field, which
includes one year supervisory experience;
OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge skills
and abilities have been achieved.

Possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License and have an acceptable driving record.
