ELD Daily Lesson Plan 1st Grade and Kindergarten Week 13 Theme: Neighborhood and Community Helpers Functions: Seek information and clarification Explain thoughts, feelings, and opinions Objectives/ Language Uses: Students will be able to: ask for help using the auxiliary “can” Students will be able to: explain personal preferences regarding future occupations Materials: * “Helpers, Helpers” Manipulative Chart 1st grade Unit 3 * Can You Find My Puppy Rigby Big Book grade K Unit 3 * Rigby Language Learning Masters Grade 1 Pages 21 and 22 * Occupation picture cards 1st grade Unit 3 * Additional occupation pictures created by teacher (pictures needed are: waiter, teacher, crossing guard, and librarian… and any additional ones you want to make) * Teacher-made 11x17 poster with sentence frame, “When I grow up I want to be a ______.” * Teacher made worksheet with sentence frame, “When I grow up I want to be a ______.” Monday I do it: *Introduce occupations from song manipulative chart, match occupation with community buildings: *Mail carrier, Firefighter, Police Officer, Teacher, and Librarian We do it: *Sing “helpers, helpers” song You do it: * Language Learning Master Grade 1 pages 21 and 22 Students make their own manipulative chart Tuesday We do it: * Pass out students made manipulative chart song * Sing song a couple of times with kids following along on own charts I do it: * Introduce/review new and some old occupation vocabulary before reading Big Book “Can you help me…” *Crossing guard, baker, firefighter, waiter, mail carrier *Read Big Book Story “Can you help me find my puppy?” Thursday: We do it: * Review “Helpers, helpers” song. Include new occupations (doctor, nurse, waiter, crossing guard, baker, etc.) * Review “Can you help me find my puppy” Big Book We do it: * Put up teacher selected occupation pictures (you can put on board or make poster/chart) * Discuss with students what each person does. * As a group, decide what each community helper does (a mail carrier brings you mail. A teacher helps you learn. A librarian helps you find books, etc). * As a group practice responding to the question “Can you help me find my puppy?” with each community helper * The response will be: No, but I can _______________. * Have students volunteers to choose occupation card. * As a group, the students will ask in unison “Can you help me find my puppy? “ * Student volunteer will answer “No, but I can _______________.” You do it: * Each student chooses a community helper occupation. * In pairs, students trade off asking question and responding. Friday: I do it: * Teacher puts all the profession picture cards up on the board and discusses sentence frame “When I grow up I want to be a ___________.” You do it: * Students complete sentence on their sentence frame worksheet and draw picture of themselves as that profession.
